Why are liberals so attracted to (dare I say even invested in) celebrities and comedians?

Everyone likes celebrities. That's how they get to be celebrities. It's just that so many celebrities are liberal. Because people love celebrities they'll get plenty of time to spout their views. That gives them some level of authority. If George Clooney is saying what you think then you feel good about it. He's cool and he agrees with you. I don't think liberals are more attracted to celebs politically. I'm sure a lot of them wish Michael Moore would shut up.

I live in California. We elected a guy governor in 2003 because he was a celebrity. People liked the movie star and voted for him because of it. I'm guessing he got a lot more votes from Republicans than Democrats. We re-elected him because he was doing a good job, but it was the celebrity that got him elected the first time.

Did you ever go to redstate and read what amounted to man-crush statements regarding Fred Thompson?

You're totally reaching if you are trying to compare five fingers worth of notable conservative celebrities with the consteallation of stars in Hollywood. Plus, as I said before, the conservative celebrities at least run for office.

Jon Voight, Dennis Miller, Bruce Willis, Joe Pesci, Sylvester Stallone , Curt Schilling, Danny Aiello, Mel Gibson, Tom Clancy. There are others, but these are the ones that I could think of off the top of my head..

Given how the right responds when a celebrity goes their way, it's not that they don't like celebrities involved in politics, it's that they don't like celebrities involved in politics when they are helping the other side.
So the real main difference is that the dems don't embrace celebrities and then complain when reps do it. Only one group is being hypocritical.

On the one hand: Chuck Norris making a commercial for Mike Huckabee.

On the other: The entire Oscars last year being an homage to Al Gore.

I wonder why the responses are different?

Evil she-devil baby eater makes me laugh:

At least under President Hillary, Republicans in Congress would know that they're supposed to fight back. When President McCain proposes the same ideas -- tax hikes, liberal judges and Social Security for illegals -- Republicans in Congress will support "our" president -- just as they supported, if only briefly, Bush's great ideas on amnesty and Harriet Miers.

You need little flags like that for Republicans since, as we know from the recent unpleasantness in Florida, Republicans are unalterably stupid.

Now everyone try and one up one another about how evil Ann is!

It is generally assumed that 30% of 'Hollywood' is 'conservative', with 70% being 'liberal'. Of those that care about politics.

I've heard it several places, thought I'd pass it along.

It's fairly unrealistic to assume of thousands of people that only 6-7 people are conservative backers.

I'm not arguing that, I'm just surprised someone tried to put a statistic to it - seems like an impossible to back up guess.

My understanding is that the GOP does raise money in Hollywood - I've read reference to well-known but not discussed very closed door fund-raisers.

None of this gets to the question I posed - why are liberals so attached to celebrities and comedians? It's not a question of hypocracy, the argument is always about the cultural influence within entertainment.

Celebrity endorsement et al = free publicity. More celebrities are drawn to the left because the left has a history of supporting liberal arts and such while the uber right would cut all funding for the arts and force the artsy folks to work in a salt mine.

It was a homage to Gore's work on the global warming issue, which is important to a lot of people in Hollywood (along with everywhere else). It wasn't about party loyalty, at least that wasn't my take on it..

That sounds about right. Of course, I don't know why this group isn't allowed to express their political views. I don't care about the opinions of the NRA, but I don't go around telling NRA people to keep their views to themselves. I just find it strange, that's all.

I tried to address that, but obviously failed. I don't think lefties are any more attached to celebrities than righties. There are more liberal stars in Hollywood than conservative ones, so it may seem like there's more of an interest from lefties, but I don't think that's the case. If a conservative celebrity shows up at a GOP event, the crowd gets just as excited about the celebrity as the lefties do at a Dem event. What are you basing this on?
