However much we're paying the National Journal people, it's almost certainly not enough.

I studied with Richard Lau--even co-authored a paper with him. I wonder how he got in a NJ writer's rolodex.

Ha ha! In class today I pointed out that they weren't going to get stimulus checks if they were dependents, but they were going to have to pay for them.

That's a Clinton. They've mastered most of the tricks in the Republican book.

But that's a dumbassed ad.

How'd that go over?

No in-debate game-thread type commentary?

I think they're both doing well. Clinton's so much more appealing in this format than just about any other; Obama, after a slow start, has pretty much argued her to a draw--which I think works to his advantage, as the main reservation people seem to have about him is whether the substance is there. He's showing pretty clearly that it is.

This debate has been a wonk's dream; I'm enjoying it hugely. Hopefully others with less nerdish leanings aren't turning the channel.

Also, I'm a little drunk.

Did anyone catch Rob Reiner and Jason Alexander? Also I think I saw Ed Helms, but not sure.

Yes, I saw the first two and had the same thing with Helms... whom I mentally identified as "the annoying guy from The Daily Show." So I guess it was him.

CNN must be in transports of ecstasy with all the star(bleep)ing possibilities of this audience.

I'm not accusing either of you of anything, but your comments got me thinking about something (that's been thought of before).

Why are liberals so attracted to (dare I say even invested in) celebrities and comedians?

Ron-ald Rea-gan?

And more seriously, Hollywood is an area of great wealth and is incredibly liberal, so it's an important source of funding for Democrats. Plus, they say DC is Hollywood for ugly people. It's a weird thing but someone like George Clooney or Leonardo DiCaprio is as excited to hang out with Al Gore as Al Gore probably is to hang out with Clooney and Leo. It's a great way to feed the ego for all involved. Look how important I am!

Liberals like to party, celebs like to party. Conservatives are just closet kinky sex freaks. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't think "Movie Star" is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Reagan (I SUPPOSE JANE WYMAN IS THE FIRST LADY!?!).

Liberals celebrities don't run for office, they just dispense advice. Except uber-nerds like Al Franken, of course.

Either way, these consistent celebrity shots are pretty stupid. Lou Gossett Jr? The Iron Eagle cares!

I've never gotten it either. I don't take those people seriously myself... but I think it's at least as much the other way 'round. Who in their right minds would want the support of Babs Streisand?

I didn't watch the Republicans last night. Were any celebrities there? Aside from Ahnuld, of course.

I didn't see it, so I don't know. The novelty of the debates has worn off, I have trouble believing I'm going to hear anything shocking. Watching the dem debate would just get me all invested in Obama winning the nomination, or worse, I'll start to dislike him.

I had this attitude back in 2000 when I was all "I could live with Al Gore" then I started following him and learning about him and realized that I was really, really wrapped up in "zOMG AL GORE CANNOT WIN". I learned my lesson and I'm not digging too deep into what Obama's all about. I know he's a liberal, I know I don't like that, but I'm keeping it vague. It's kind of in self defense, because I feel pretty certain he'd win if he can get through Tuesday and win the nomination.

I know you didn't watch it... but they were going into their differences on health care early on (short version: Hillary's for mandates b/c she believes in universal coverage, Obama is against mandates b/c he thinks that people will choose to get insured if they can afford it), and it occurred to me that her classic Big Government liberalism in this issue is designed to hit orthodox Democrats where they live, while his "trust people to do the right thing" is (ironically) much more Third Way, and thus easier for indies and Republicans to swallow.

It's really amazing that so many Democrats are willing to throw away much better odds of victory, and progressive governance with Obama, either because of Clinton Brand loyalty or because she hits their sexytime buttons with liberal orthodoxy.
