9-30-07: a day Phillies fans will remember...NL East Champs

I don't argue that there are more cubs fans here and there, I'm arguing that they aren't this insurmountable or third in all of MLB force you suggest. If you were right, the Cubs should be at least third in team value, shouldn't they? They're fifth, 4 million ahead of the Phillies (who are in sixth). The Cubs and Atlanta are extremely similar in that both are teams for large portions of the country who have no baseball team thanks to cable TV.

You're last comment about the Braves tells me you're looking at this too anecdotally and specific to your region.

The sale of the Cubs is going to go for more than a billion dollars. I'm not sure what else is included, but the Phillies are not worth anything near a billion dollars.

LOOK - All's I'm saying is that it's easy to trash the Phils ad revenue draw just because there is no recent anecdotal evidence to compare to. In every other method of TV ratings, Philly is strong, stronger than Chicago depending on what demographics you are looking at.

I don't see MLB saying "Sixth largest market - screw em, there's no money to be made there". It. Makes. No. Sense.

In the end - there has to be an answer as to how they decide who plays when - does anyone know what it is?

The Phillies aren't for sale, the comparison is irrelevant - and you're assertion is impossible to prove or disprove. I'm going off of Forbes 2007 list.

Not as densely populated, but when you take into account the sheer geographic area they cover, it's pretty close. Not only that, but far-flung Chicagohans live all around the country and are fiercely and passionately loyal.

There's a strong possibility that more cubs fans show up in Arizona than D'back fans

There certainly are a lot of them, I wouldn't quite go that far, but they've had Spring Training there for decades and have built a Yankees-in-Tampa style fanbase there.

Central time zone (Cubs) vs. "Arizona" time zone (same as Pacific this month, I think); Eastern time zone vs. either Pacific or Mountain. I would imagine the Phillies will get most of the earlier games for that reason.

That's fine. MLB and its franchises are clients of my employer, so I'm privy to non-public financial info, but that doesn't let me prove anything.

Regardless, I think you'll find very little support for your assertion that the Cubs national fanbase is not that much larger than the Phillies national fanbase. Even in Philadelphia, the Eagles have always had more fan support than the Phillies. I'm not going to be able to prove anything to you, but if you ask people which MLB teams have large national followings, you probably get the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers and maybe the Mets. The common denominator? New York roots or beloved old stadiums and long curses.

What makes no sense is you being so myopic and focusing ONLY on the city of philadelphia and not understanding that the cubs are the NL TV equivalent of the Yankees / Red Sox

Not to mention the whole 'curse' nonsense

You can watch the entire game on MLB.TV for free... the Philly feed too.

I love the part during the celebration where Geary is just spraying champaign by himself for about 15 seconds. I can see how he makes such a great wingman.

Most amazing game ever. I stayed for an hour afterwards and was right behind the net. It was awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

I still couldn't believe Reyes today... every time I turned the game on he was laughing it up. They were down 8-1 and he didn't even care.
