It also has to make the Marlins feel a bit silly for retiring his number and all.

If he was with his buddies, one of whom was driving, it's not too farfetched to assume that they were all doing drugs and drinking.

I understand it happens, and he certainly didn't deserve to die because he was doing drugs. It's hard not to consider him a scumbag when he had so many people that needed him, and he threw it away for one night of poor choices.
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.

I'd guess it was more than just one night. But on this night, it cost him his life.

Well they did autopsies and Fernandez was the only one legally drunk. The other 2 were below the limit. And 2 of them had coke in their system, 1 didn't.

Also cocaine is absolutely a recreational drug. So no to whoever said it wasn't.

Its illegal but still very recreational

Just cause it was in his system doesn't make him a fucking coke head.

Just as him being drunk doesnt make him an alcoholic.

Was he stupid that night sure. But he had the intent of being stupid in an altered state apparently, probably viewed it as fun. It was a poor choice that cost him his life.

I'm still not going to be naive about it.

Don't see what takes are laughably stupid in here

Edit: I don't think he's a scumbag though fwiw . nor do I find this any less tragic really. I'm minority on this most likely now though.

a 24 year old kid with the world at his feet was flawed. so are most 24 year olds. and 30 year olds. and 40 year olds. it's really sad that he died. end of story.

poor decision making. made lots of them as a 24 year old. make lots of them today, just of a differing variety.

Sounds like there's evidence that Jose wasn't operating the boat when it crashed.

He was a 24 year old kid who got drunk and did some coke - if that makes you a "scumbag" I know lots of people who are scumbags.

I know he had a kid on the way and should have made better choices. But again, I know plenty of full grown adults who occasionally make bad choices. 24 ain't no full-grown adult, kid coming or not.

Should he have been drunk and high? No, I guess not. My original point was that so long as the person who was piloting the boat was sober, I'm not sure we ought to be too judge about him not being sober. Now, if he were driving the boat, that'd be different. Or if the guy piloting the boat was tanked himself, also different. But as someone else pointed out, only Jose Fernandez was legally drunk, and of the two what weren't, only one had coke in his system.

If the guy piloting the boat was the one under the limit with no coke in his system, I don't see a reason to be judgy at all.

Go fuck yourself. Speaking from experience. Seriously, go fuck yourself with a baseball bat.

If it's not a recreational drug, what is it? I am sure people who become addicted find nothing "recreational" about it, but I don't think that's his point. A "recreational" drug, to my mind, is one with no medicinal value taken purely for its mood altering effects.

Sounds like the very definition of cocaine.

Was he a horrible human being? No. I don't think anyone is saying that. But we have to be careful not to build him up as some sort of a role model, like the Marlins and all of baseball did after he died.
