I wonder if Colon didn't have the suspension thing hanging over him if he might have an outside shot at the HoF?

this is kinda crazy...

Bryce Harper's last 11 trips to the plate? ZERO official at-bats: BB, BB, SF, BB, IBB, BB, BB, IBB, HBP, BB, IBB.

Baseball Prospectus continues to go downhill. Baumann might be the best indicator of the sites free fall.

Today he posted an article about limiting intentional walks to one a game to an individual hitter. (Because of the Harper thing).

You can walk a guy pretty easily without going through the intentional walk process anyway so the argument makes no sense to vein with. Further, it would be complicated and difficult to enforce and pretty much a waste.

Maybe we should have a BP atrocities thread.

He had a five year "peak" at an ERA+ of 127 (98-02). Since then he has an ERA+ of 104 and K/9 of 6.4.

His only remarkable trait has not been dying on the mound.

So I did the play index thing, looking for HoF pitchers sorted by career ERA+. Colon is at 110 for his career right now.

HoFers with an ERA+ < 110, minimum 200 games, minimum 60% of appearances as a starter:
Code: Select all
Rube Marquard   103
Catfish Hunter   104
Herb Pennock   106
Early Wynn   107
Burleigh Grimes   108
Don Sutton   108
Jesse Haines   109
Red Ruffing   109

Here's the next group, in between 110 and 120:
Code: Select all
Nolan Ryan   112
Waite Hoyt   112
Chief Bender   112
Robin Roberts   113
Vic Willis   113
Jack Chesbro   114
Jim Bunning   115
Fergie Jenkins   115
Eppa Rixey   115
Joe McGinnity   115
Phil Niekro   115
Steve Carlton   115
Gaylord Perry   117
Tom Glavine   118
Ted Lyons   118
Bert Blyleven   118
Warren Spahn   119
Red Faber   119
Bob Lemon   119

Yeah, I don't get the "ban intentional walks" movement, the reason they exist is for convenience. Unless they'd like an umpire to determine whether a player is being walked intentionally or not and punish accordingly, which seems like the least fun rule of all time, it's a necessary evil. Don't want somebody to get intentionally walked every time? Put an actual hitter behind him in the lineup instead of Ryan Zimmerman. They're giving you a free baserunner. That's the crux of the sabermetric movement. A walk is as good as a hit.

Well it only took ONE appearance to make the Chapman filter necessary again

Was messing around with Fangraphs this morning. Since 2006 (minimum 2000 IP), only Felix Hernandez has a lower ERA minus (78) than Cole Hamels (81). Also, of the seven pitchers who qualified in these parameters (Hernandez, Hamels, Sabathia, Verlander, Haren, Buehrle and Shields), Cole has the highest K% and KBB%.

Pretty amazing run for Cole.
