I had to get a certified check yesterday and asked the teller what the difference was between a certified check and a cashier's check. No one in the branch could tell me. I've come to the conclusion that there is no discernible difference.

I can tell you why they did that. A bank check is a fuckton easier for the branch staff to give you than to certify your check and from an end user perspective, it makes no difference most of the time. Certifying a check has more steps and is manual stuff they have to do, and giving you a bank check just requires entering the information into the computer then printing and signing the check.
