Has Mason really been that bad to you? Emery/Zepp is not a good enough backup situation, but I think Mason has been above average.

It's so hard to tell with the defense but his stats are not great and he can't seem to stay healthy recently. He really had a slow start.

Zac Rinaldo has played 1,675 minutes in the NHL. The league has disciplined him for a total of 1,449 minutes

So, talking about the waivers situation, since the flyers are in cap hell, couldn't they waive umberger or vinny or McDonald or whoever and stash them with the phantoms and then not have to deal with the cap hit anymore? If someone claims them then even better, right?

Luckily they're all under 35, because if they're over 35 the cap still hits (have until April for Vinny).

Rinaldo is one of 11 forwards in NHL history to have played over 200 games and produce 20 points or less. He is the only one still in NHL.

It's embarrassing he's still a Flyers and even more embarrassing people defend him.

No, you used to be able to do that, but they changed that in the most recent CBA. If someone claims him, the whole contract comes off, but if you send him to the AHL, all but 900K still counts on your cap. So if Vinny makes 4.5M, and they sent him to the Phantoms, they'd still have 3.6M of it on their cap.

Probably a concession with the two amnesties granted.

Yep. They also took away re-entry waivers, which left you on the hook for half the deal to call somebody up, which was why nobody who was ever sent to the AHL ever was recalled. Wade Redden was in the AHL for like three years.

Gotcha, makes sense. Then why did the Kings send Richards down? What is the point of that when they could just scratch him most nights and then if they need him he's around and doesn't have to be recalled.

Probably praying someone like Homer didn't know the rules and claimed him.

The quick removal might seem cold, but it was the only option left for Kings general manager Dean Lombardi, who put Richards on waivers. Lombardi could no longer justify paying the underperforming Richards, especially with the pending unrestricted free agency of right wing Justin Williams, center Jarret Stoll and defenseman Robyn Regehr.

"That's the thing we've got to work through," Lombardi said. "Mike, in his career, he's shown he can be a .330 hitter and get you 80 RBIs and be an All-Star player. So maybe at this stage, maybe it's not there. But I still think he's capable of being a .280 hitter and do a lot of those things that only he can do. Basically, right now he's batting .200. But I don't see any reason why he can't get back to that. He's got to do what he's got to do."

Other teams have until Tuesday morning to claim Richards. Otherwise, he will be sent to Manchester of the American Hockey League to work on his game.

Lombardi said Richards could return. But the move was somewhat of a message to the struggling Kings, who are 2-4-5 in their past 11 games and out of the Stanley Cup Playoff picture.
