He wouldn't have an upcoming suspension, so there's that.

Goodbye, Zac.

As to that whine-fest of an article, lemme get this straight, the Penguins bring in the dude from Youngblood specifically for this game and WE are the ones pitching the circus tent? I guess Bellemare had to twist Farnham's arm to drop the gloves before kicking his ass? How about Downie and Schenn? Looked as though Downie actually went after Schenn there. Same with Sill and Raffl. Jake clearly thought Scuderi was going after his knees so he exploded. That was probably the only fight the was clearly started by a Flyer.

Bottom line - Fuck the Penguins!

In person hearing, I am guessing he gets six games.

Why would he be kidding?

Don't get me wrong, he's an idiot for saying that publicly, but that hit absolutely changed the game. The other players said the same afterwards.

1. You get a great trade off of Rinaldo for Letang out of the game
2. You take what started as another leisurely Sunday skate with no emotion and turned it into a war where the Pens were off their game
3. Finally, for the first time all year, the Flyers played with passion and emotion and actually acted like they wanted to be on the ice.

You cannot play a contact sport soft and without passion or emotion. I don't care how much the rules have changed. If a level of violence is part of the sport, you will be swallowed up if you play soft. They have been complete garbage all year and one of the easiest teams to play against in the league because they have played a soft, passive brand of hockey in the name of "discipline." It's a joke and it never, ever works unless you have all-star level talent up and down your lineup like Detroit has had in previous years.

I applaud Rinaldo and only wish it was Crosby that he had hit. Couldn't care less if he gets suspended (probably will help since he sucks). He finally made a contribution on the ice and did what he is supposed to do.......get his team going.

If the Flyers brought that effort and level of aggression (and I'm not talking about fights) every night they wouldn't be the mess they are right now. And make no mistake about it, a ton of that falls on the coach.

And if the Pens would have scored on that five minute power play they would have had the momentum.

Not only is it stupid to want a goon to illegally board a player to fire up his team, but it is also dumb to hope for injury.
Add to that the Flyers worst PK in the NHL and Penguins #5 PP and it was a dumb move that worked out.

If that happened to Giroux everyone would flip out. There is no room in Hockey for that play.

Not really sure I understand the "trade off" comment. This isn't akin to a five minute fighting major where you pull a star player off the ice by dragging them into a fight. Saying that you get a "great trade off" by injuring a guy? WTF?

I'm all for the physical play but not for purposely injuring other players.

Serious question.........how old are you guys? Did you get to see the NHL in the 80's and even 90's?

I know the game and fans who watch have changed, but man, this stuff used to happen almost every night. Heaven forbid something happens where a game is actually, you know, entertaining and watchable.

like the line in that article said, "do that thing theyve always done, 40 years after it last worked". it's a skill league now so it should be alarming that the most entertaining game for you was one in which the flyers had like 90 pim

Last night two of the dirtiest players in the league were on display in Rinaldo and Downie and they both contributed nothing positive for their team. Rinaldo is a knuckle dragger and nothing more than that. He's a complete embarrassment to the organization. The best part of Rinaldo's efforts in the game is that with this suspension, Rinaldo will not be an option for Berube for a while.Hopefully a twenty gamer.
Getting a team fired up by a fight is one thing. Boarding someone from behind with an intent to injure is totally different. IMO, the Flyers got more of an emotional boost from Schenn wailing on Downie; Voracek blasting Scuderi and Bellmare taking out that AHL punk from Wilkes Barre that the Penguins put on the ice.

I mean, the studio crew on NBC Sports all said it was the most entertaining game of the NHL season this year. The game was in the first segment on SportsCenter both last night and this morning, and the host on NHL Network said if all games were like last nights' the NHL could compete with the NFL (absurd, but the point is clear).

Playing with passion, energy and intensity hasn't worked for 40 years?

Hmm.....interesting take.

I'll go back to my Flyers board now.

Not for nothing, but Evgeni Malkin is the dirtiest player in the NHL.

And none of those other things happen without the initial hit. You need something to set a game off, otherwise it would have been another random Tuesday night open skate (and probably another loss).

Flyers new game plan. Illegally board a player with intent to injury to start the game.
