I hear you, but them even thinking about Maddon is a really not-Phillies thing to do. And the scouting hires were relatively bold for them.

So the outlier for me is Amaro still being here. But I said months ago I think Gillick is the GM, which the past few weeks certainly haven't dissuaded me of, which would explain letting Amaro play out the string

I've said they don't deserve the benefit of our doubt, but I would be shocked if Amaro is here beyond 2015. And, barring a miracle season, pissed

could you imagine Beane with a 200 million dollar payroll?

Swoon

I have imagined that. I think Boston and NY have also imagined that...to no avail. I am pretty sure that Beane is part owner of the A's at this point. I can't see him leaving Oakland any time soon.

The GM of the Phillies doesn't make decisions by himself. That's not how they do things. I really think most decisions are done as a team, or at least Amaro and others have suggested as much. Why would they fire a guy who is doing things they decided to do as a team? I just don't see it. If the Phils move in a positive direction even a bit, they'll say they're turning things around and that he deserves the chance to right the ship. I'm not as tuned into things anymore as many of you, but I haven't seen any public or private indication that Amaro is going anywhere.

Other than:

1) Amaro not being extended

2) Gillick making it clear he has final say

3) Amaro abruptly shifting to "rebuild" talk after Gillick did

On top of the whole world, it seems, except for Montgomery being down on Amaro, who is INSANELY unpopular among their customers. Again, I totally understand skepticism toward them, but let's see how it plays out

If he gets fired, I think it will be because of public backlash. I think they're waiting to see if they can ride out the storm. If they show any improvement, I think he'll be extended. What I see from those examples you listed is the Phillies being cautious with backing a guy who is very unpopular. I think they are going way out of their way to not fire him. Otherwise, he'd be gone by now, right?

Maybe. We'll see. I feel like they would have fired him if they were going to fire him. I think some reasonable improvement leads to his resigning. I'm very happy to be wrong on this one.

Yup. Beane has been a minority owner of the A's since 2005.

Because:
A) Amaro didn't adequately replace departing offensive talent (Burrell, Werth, etc.) with similar talent fits
B) Amaro switched from a take-and-rake offense with adequate pitching philosophy to a run manufacturing offense with plus pitching philosophy

IOW, Amaro sucks at everything baseball.

I really don't think that Ruben is going anywhere anytime soon. This is the same group that kept Ed Wade here until they just didn't have a choice anymore. Change needs to happen at the ownership level because the people that actually run the franchise are some of the most change resistant people ever. Thankfully, it does sound like ownership may finalyy be in the process of morphing.

Anyone can win the WFC. Giants and Royals showed that. The Phils can win it all next year if they can make the playoffs with 70 wins. Once they are in the playoffs all they have to do is get hot. Defense and slap and dash offense to score just enough to win.

Pretty easy. The intern guy has been working on this for a while. He's been scouting Africa and the pacific islands for speedy outfielders.

The phillies minor league teams are actually lousy with international players. Too bad they pretty much all suck. You only need eleven or twelve players. They just need some luck.
Teams lie, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad. They do it to get an advantage while they look at the trade market or just because they can
