@Buster_ESPN
The Phillies have signaled to some corners of the market that they're going to be ready to deal veterans this winter,and eat money to do it.

I hope so but I'll believe it when I see it.

They shouldn't have to eat $ on Rollins, Utley or Hamels so I'm hoping this indicates both Papelbon and Howard

No way to eat enough money to move Howard. Maybe someone would be willing to pay $2m for him in '15, but frankly I doubt it.

He'll have to be cut. Sad that it has come to that.

I agree with you. I can't see a scenario in which any team trades for him for any amount of money, given the Phillies' desire to move him. The question then would be would the Phillies release him?

If I were the Phillies, I'd try to cut a deal with him to defer a bunch of his money for a while in exchange for cutting him sooner rather than later to give him the best chance to latch on with an AL team.

If he doesn't want to do that, I think the Phillies need to bring him to spring training on the off chance another winter allows him a bit of an indian summer of his career. If he looks the same, then cut him whenever - they could hold on to him and have him as a pinch hitter (the shift is less of a factor when there are runners on base, so he might be a bit of an asset there), but I think it is better to just move on if there are no clear signs of a renaissance.

Floating word through Steaks and Zolecki in July that they might cut Howard told me A) it's very much on the table and B) there aren't trade suitors

Possible exception being something like the Hamilton swap I proposed

What would the benefit be of deferring money? It will still impact out "cap" number this year and through the rest of the contract. It would just turn into a deferred liability for the owners to keep paying, with interest, his money. I don't think the owners have a cash flow problem, they just don't want to pay the tax for going over the cap.

Heyman says that Hamels is working on updating his no-trade list.

If/when the Phils release Howard, some team would likely take a chance on him as a DH or PH at league minimum ($500k), leaving the Phils on the hook for the rest of his contract (more than $60 million in guaranteed money). Even if no one picks him up, the Phils will still have to pay the $60+mil. That's a lot of cabbage to eat with nothing to show for it.

One of the bazillion reasons I hate Amaro.

amaro figuring out the sunk cost concept would be a good thing.

amaro figuring out how not to sink costs would be a better thing.

It's possible Gillick is waiting for the January update on Monty's condition to make a decision on Amaro. If Monty doesn't come back, and Gillick stays on as pres, maybe Amaro gets fired, since it wouldn't be right for Gillick to make such a big decision as a temp president. I do think if Monty comes back Amaro definitely stays though.
