fwiw, i'm warming up to the idea of signing tomas. even if not as good as some of the other recent cuban imports, he'll be in his prime just in time for the phils next conceivable window of opportunity in 2017-19, and should be at least a league average 1b in those years.

that makes the 2017 lineup something like quinn(cf)-crawford(ss)-dugan/collier/pointer(lf)-tomas(1b)-franco(3b)-altherr(rf)-joseph/rupp(c)-galvis(2b) with some better catchers (knapp, grullon) and good outfield prospects nearly ready in the high minors and plenty of time to upgrade 2b before then if cumana or valentin or pullin haven't emerged as a solution.

It would be stupid to sign a league average 1st baseman for that type of money and years.

I *think* all players with NTCs are doing this. I recall hearing those can be updated and have to be in Nov 1st or something.

which is partly why i typed "at least"

league average production for a regular lineup position player is 2war, which currently is worth close to $10million/yr, and is growing every year. won't have to be far above average for 4-5 prime years to be worth $15million a year for 6-7 years once mlb salary inflation is taken into account.

He's an of. Don't think they'll sign him and stick him at 1b.

(a) scouting reports consistently cite a thick body likely to move him to corner of or 1b.
(b) his bat should play at 1b, and being athletic enough to play outfield means he should be much, much, better at defense than our last two 1bs.
(c) howard almost certainly will be gone by then
(d) though he would fill an outfield hole in 2015-16, by 2017 there should be a few other prospects ready for the outfield corner spots.
(e) somehow or other, the phils minor league system seems to be missing 1b prospects who can hit for power and average, and we've been cursed at 3b for so long i don't dare consider creating a new 3b hole by moving franco unless asche improves dramatically (also a prerequisite for using asche to replace utley) or franco proves unable to stick at 3b. ruf will be past his prime by then, so we'll likely need to move one our corner outfield players to 1b to fill the hole. if tomas proves the least athletic, he's the logical choice.

Quite a difference between "might have to move to corner OF" and "move to first base." Particularly in his mid-20s.

You don't pay $100m+ to put a guy at first base--or, to put it another way, if they thought they'd have to do that with Tomas, they wouldn't pay him nine figures anyway and it's moot. The Phillies have gotten this exactly backwards, as they have so much else, but unless you have a big developmental score, first base really should be the place you find a misfit toy: some big ungainly dude who draws walks and mashes, maybe just in a platoon context, and doesn't cost much.
