is it contentious to say that if there was no salary cap the knicks or lakers would probably pay 40-50 mil a year for lebron?

The more I think about it, the more I think there's a better and fairer way to achieve the league's goals of enhancing competition and suppressing costs. Someone alluded to it earlier, but the better way might be to have a hard cap and hard floor and let both the league and players negotiate with whomever they please. Why should free agency be limited to veteran players? Why not let a team like the Sixers, who have diligently created lots of cap room, spend it how they please, whether on veteran or rookie free agents? A hard cap would ensure that all the best players couldn't go to one place and all players, whether veteran or rookie, would be free to shop around for the best situation, both in terms of money and location.

The biggest loss for the league and the networks would be the excitement, promotion and money generated from Draft Day. But that could be replaced by "Market Day" (or "Days") when all the teams, players and their representatives could gather in one public, televised venue and negotiate new deals. That would be a very entertaining event.

Of course this idea doesn't eliminate all arguably antitrust arguments but, if you accept that competitive sports are, by nature, different from other industries by virtue of the goal of some degree of parity among the teams, at the very least you wouldn't be treating the rookies as second-class citizens.

Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

If they made a players league with ABA balls, looser rules on traveling and outdoor courts I'd watch. XBA.
