Yeah, my phone blew up last night with "THIS SHIT IS RIGGED."

I want to know why they think the NBA loves Cleveland so much. This lottery wasn't their worst case scenario, but it's in the ballpark.

From this year's and last year's conspiracy articles I quoted earlier in thread:

To paraphrase Frank Sinatra, how lucky can one guy be? Some fans from other teams want to hire the bowtie-clad Nick Gilbert to be their team's representative at this year's draft, and who can blame them? Cavs owner Dan Gilbert's kid was present when the Cavs waltzed away with the No. 1 pick in both 2011 (on the heels of the LeBron James "Decision" to go to Miami) and 2013, despite not being the favored team in either lottery. Landing two of the past three No. 1 overall selections hasn't completely changed the Cavs fortunes, however, as, well, here they are again. If Nick does represent the team again this year, it's likely his percentage will drop down to a measly .500

Stern desperately wants to create a Cavaliers-Heat rivalry to boost rankings, and to do so, he must make the Cavaliers better. Dan Gilbert remained loyal during the lockout, and especially after LeBron became the worst example of players seizing control from teams, Stern will reward Gilbert with a second No. 1 pick.

Multiple lottery victories were included in the blood oath signed by Stern and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert that led to Gilbert dropping tampering charges against the Heat. Had Gilbert continued his crusade, the Heat's 2011 Southeast Division title would have been vacated, and LeBron may have been Chris Webber'd out of history. Nerlens Noel is a small price to pay to prevent that.

It's for effect (obviously). The point is that the owners and consumers aren't the only constituency with an interest.

yes, but it's kinda up to them. if they want to ruin a good thing by making sports tilted towards the super cities, they can do that, but the sport might topple in on itself and then there's no money. I think some slight imposition is not unreasonable. Beyond the agents, who have their own incentives, this doesn't seem to come up much except for the Joe Sheehans of this world (and yourself since I don't necessarily want to insult you as a Joe Sheehan).

yeah, idk. it's not a big city, outside of Lebron it's never been a merch seller, and the owner isn't dynamic or anything. ping pong balls bounce different ways, is all.

How much real difference is there between a professional sports league draft and the medical student resident match program?

med residents are fightin'

Unfortunately, not the ones affected by the draft. The link you posted about medical residents makes for fascinating reading. Everybody loves the free market until they have to pay for it.

well, isn't the idea that their talent is so prodigious they could make way more without the league having a salary cap? but then it's taken as presumed that they wouldn't stand a chance to make that money without the league structure
