okay so I didn't watch the whole thing. but i saw them but 14 balls in the lotto machine, draw four, and then from that somehow determine Cleveland got the first pick.

I'm even more confused

Each team is given a list of different combinations numbers in a specific order, using 1-14.

So for instance, the Sixers may have 8-5-3-12 and 500 other combos. And the teams with a higher number of chances to win the lottery have more combinations. They then draw three combinations for the top three picks.

I think they do it this way because it'd have to be a YUGE LOTTERY BALL PICKER to fit in like 15,000 team logo balls

So we're going to know pretty quickly whether the Pels pick is in the top 3, right?

I'm still confused. What exactly is a combination? Are the combinations on little balls? This is so confusing.

there are a certain number of balls, each of them numbered. The commish pulls out some balls at random. Each team is assigned a number of combinations, so if the commish pulls out ball numbers 1, 2 then 3 then who ever had combo 1-2-3 gets whatever pick he was selecting for. The shit teams get more combinations.

No, there are 14 balls in the shuffler. 1-14. No repeats. The guy then draws four of the numbers to assign a selection... for instance, 6-11-3-9. In that order. They then match that combination with a team -- each team is assigned a list of number combinations using 1-14, with the worst team getting the most combinations and the "best" getting the fewest.

So in this scenario the team with 6-11-3-9 would get the #1 overall pick. They then draw combinations for the #2 and #3 picks. If the combo drawn matches a team that already got a selection, they redraw until they match a team that hasn't gotten a selection.

But what is a combination and how does one combination differ from another? Is it a bunch or numbers? And what do those numbers mean?

It's a combination of four numbers in a specific order. Think of how many of these you can make with 14 different numbers, and imagine how long a list of a team's potential combinations are:

1-2-3-4
1-3-2-4
1-2-4-3

No numbers repeat in a combination. They use 14 different numbers for the 14 different teams, but it's a way of making the process completely random. And as I said above, it's a way of using a normal sized machine instead of trying to shove 30,000 team logo balls into one machine.

Also, only one team is assigned each combo. So there's a team that has 1-2-3-4 IN THAT ORDER, but no other team has it.
