The baseball groupies of Corvalis are far superior to the women of Clearwater.

Giancarlo Baumann ‏@MJ_Baumann 15 Aug
Think about that. Tin Ruf is worse than Juan Pierre. Without a second thought.

wait Darin Ruf is worse than Pierre in LF defensively? #ohlord

Giancarlo Baumann ‏@MJ_Baumann 15 Aug
My understanding is that he's worse in LF than Trump Tower RT @TonyMcIV wait Darin Ruf is worse than Pierre in LF defensively? #ohlord

Goldstein really dislikes Ruf. Says he's old for his level (he is, not his fault tho) and can only play first

Giancarlo Baumann ‏@MJ_Baumann 15 Aug
@loctastic I'm aware. I'm inclined to dislike him as well, because Goldstein is a pro and both of those things are true.

Giancarlo Baumann ‏@MJ_Baumann 15 Aug
@loctastic @doctomg My point is mainly that there is almost literally no chance he becomes even a productive MLB bench player.

I dunno either way. He sounds awfully Rizzoti-ish. That dude couldn't play, for sure

I took a lot of crap last year from people who saw Ruf’s AA numbers and were convinced he was the new blue blood and the great white hope, and that he used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

It was part of a response to a question about whether Ruf was for real or not. The quote preceded a summary of why he was not enthusiastic about Ruf last year (age, he is "pudgy", etc.) and a discussion of why he is still not sold on him yet and what he would need to see before he would "eat crow".

As for the "new blue blood", "great white hope" and "carried in the arms of cheerleaders"...there is no other context to explain that.

So basically he checked Ruf's baseball reference page last year and concluded he'd never amount to anything, put that out there publicly -- Ruf has done nothing but mash at the MLB level, and he's still taking jabs at people who are enjoying Ruf?

I think he got his scouting report from the guy who says Asche won't be able to drive the ball because of skinny forearms.

I'm all for stats and preponderance of evidence. But there are exceptions, and it blows my mind to see him -- and Law, who does actually try to see a guy play in person once, to be fair -- kind of double down after the last two summers.

He's moving the goalposts. He mocked people last year and at the beginning of this year for being optimistic about Ruf. He said he wouldn't even make it as a bench player. He dismissed his performance at AA because he was old for the league. Now he is dismissing his performance because pitchers haven't seen him enough.

It never occurred to me that he’d hit this well for any period of time, but he’s going to need a few more times around the league to convince me he’s an actual middle-of-the-order bat. If opposing pitchers have another 400 plate appearances to figure him out and he’s still slugging close to .600, then I’ll eat crow for sure.

Therefore, in order for him to admit he was wrong for saying that Ruf = Rizzotti and that Ruf has almost literally no chance to become a productive MLB bench player, Ruf will have to have an entire season's worth of at bats in which he slugs better than everyone but a handful of MLB players are currently slugging.

One thing that's fun about making fun of Scouty talk is understanding that they don't agree among themselves all the time. All of them are wrong a lot. It's part of the game.

I respect and love to read and listen to my insider Scouty guys. They do great work. They are good at what they do. I take what they say and write seriously. But it's important to understand there are always exceptions and outliers.

If you take an approach that all prospects except for a tiny few favorites aren't going to be any good, you will be "right" most of the time. But who cares. It's a helluva lot more fun to make fun of Scouty talk and enjoy the success of a Ruf or Asche and his skinny arms and Franco and his deep, deep load.

And if a prospect doesn't pan out, so what? That happens all the time. Baumann wrote that one thing about what a tragedy it was for him that some prospect didn't work out. He compared it to not getting to go to the prom with Suzy Slutzky or something and how,he was scarred for, life or,some nonsense. Sorry to all the shtick police but I lol'd reading that one. OMG.

I fell in love with potential once, and got burned. Be more cautious than I was and don’t jump in all at once, or you’ll be left with nothing but disappointment and regret.
