Phillies Thoughts- Ruben Amaro: Great GM or The Greatest GM?

i've noticed lots of talk amongst the hoi polloi that Rollins is 'selfish' and 'lazy'. No, maybe he's just 35 years old and not that good anymore. This crap gets tiresome.

The fact that they're all spare parts or worse is the killer.

To me, the failure of the Lee to Seattle trade falls into the lap of Bennie Looper. He came to the Phillies FO from the Mariners organization and knew the talent that they had in their system. He had to be consulted on which players to take back in the deal. Most likely, Gilles, Aumont and Ramirez were the guys that he fingered as good compensation for Lee.

I don't get the lazy claims either, but Rollins has been labelled a selfish player for more than a decade. Frankly, it is an assessment with which I agree.

Yeah. Looper was the guy. Although Gillies and Aumont both looked pretty good at the time. Gilliies is actually a pretty big guy. his ceiling was higher than Revere. His hamstrings failed him when he should have been developing. Now he's way far behind and is barely a prospect at all. Aumont can be unhittable at times. Has zero command of the control. I'm sure the Phillies thought they had a chance to fix him. JC throws hard.

This is the problem with prospects. These guys looked pretty good at the time of the trade. I don't know if Saunders was even available but he is a guy I've liked. But he has had lots of struggles too. Morrow is a guy a lot of folks here loved. But he's not really been much good either.

In fact, many teams made out like bandits trading with the Mariners during the Bavasi years. But since then, the Mariner prospects have been big disappointments for the most part.

Prospects are a funny game.
