I don't think Rube is a blathering idiot. I do think he has a plan. I just have no idea what it is, or if it's a good one.

well no, not really. when you are wrong most of the time, you can't just point at one instance of being right and act like that lends credibility. no offence to jflnyc

I was mostly joking, think mccare is right on. I imagine there will be either corroborations or conflicting accounts in the next few days that will give us better ideas. Rosenthal is obviously well connected with RAJ, I imagine he will report on this.

I can get on board with giving Ruben buckets of shit for not doing too much to put a good product on the field, but seriously, who wants to be the next GM viewed atlarge as the Yankees bitch?
yawn

Even taking back fat Joba for Young would have been better than nothing.

Hmmm

I have absolutely no idea why either of these things would happen.

In fairness, we have no idea what that "prospect" was. Minor league filler might as well be zero return. The money is a non-issue for the Phillies, so don't get caught up in that. Rube probably wanted no money and a better prospect, but fell flat.

God I feel dirty for defending Rube.

What is there to defend? IF this report is true -- which Amaro denied this morning -- it was obviously a weak offer. He tried hard to deal Young all week.

And as much as everyone wants a pound of flesh from this team, which I understand to a certain degree, they still need to field a squad every night. Would you really feel better about Steven Lerud behind the plate in exchange for an A-ball lottery ticket? You certain that Young and Ruiz will be of no help whatsoever to Asche or Pettibone or Bastardo etc, and will instead stall their progress? (Assuming they aren't traded this month for something better than what was available yesterday.)

smh

You're conflating a few things here. I'm fine with not dealing Ruiz, for a bunch of reasons: selling low, still-solid defense, might be back cheap. There's no way MY comes back, though, and almost any Papelbon deal IMO would have been a good one, though I know you're higher on him.

I'm also edging toward the opinion that falling into protected-pick territory would be a very good thing for this team. They're going after at least QO guy this winter, and I'd really rather keep next year's first-rounder.

Not a realistic consideration for the GM, imo. You can't voluntarily present a shit show at the park all summer. (Which could still happen anyway.) Standing pat is perfectly defensible to me so long as the young guys get plenty of burn

Sure it is. Ask the Nats.

And by my count, they've got the 11th pick right now. It wouldn't take much to drop one place and protect that first rounder.

For M Young plus giving back 5 million dollars? What the heck do you think Young is worth to the Phillies?
