I wonder what Howie Kendrick would cost prospect wise?

He is signed at 9.7 next year and 9.85 the following.

Good lord. If Utley is even close to that number, why hasn't Rubes gotten it done already?

I'm skeptical about that number. But if that happens, Utley is probably the last player who reached superstar level but never get a contract that far exceeded his value.

There's a word for a guy in charge who makes a series of important, expensive decisions, each one of which can be defended as reasonable at the time, in a vacuum, but, for whatever reason, as a whole, stink like feet. The word is "fired".

Add to that the fact that some of the decisions can't be defended by anyone other than Grote, and the path forward is clear. But it won't happen until Amaro gets another year-plus to work his brand of magic.

We have a roster full of aging, declining, injury-riddled, untradeable players with bloated contracts and NTC's. We've gone from the best record in baseball to a sub-.500 team in less than two years. And now, our GM who created this mess is going to double-down on the strategy by extending the contract of our beloved, but aging and injury-prone 2B for his age 35-37 seasons.

I'm sorry, but any attempt to paint the moves of the last couple of years as positive is either delusion or sophistry.

2nd, I don''t want to resign Utley.

But, I wonder if Utley would be willing to go to third. 2-3 year deal would would good time wise for Franco.

Don't worry, Mike Adams will be back next year to fix the bullpen.

Even that would be a fair deal. Fangraphs has him at 3.1 fWAR last year despite missing half of the season and 2.9 already this year. That projects to 4.2 fWAR. Assume the 0.5 decline per season, and you'd still get 3.7/3.2/2.7. I think the going rate is around $6M/WAR, so that's still slightly below market value.

And honestly, Utley is the one guy for whom I'd be willing to get emotional and overpay on a three year deal.

TBH, I think it's more likely to be lower dollars, but with a 4th-year vesting option to match Jimmy's.

Not that it really matters but Chase will be 10/5 in a few weeks, so full NTC if he is extended

You don't have to worry about the others. They've already been taken care of.

He already has a most-favored-nation trade clause, so he essentially has one now due to Young's contract, right?

Not really. Just Howard. As bad as Jimmy's been this season, SS is such an atrocious position right now that his three-year value will still likely exceed the cost of the contract. The vesting option might be a problem though. Who else? Chooch is likely going to be allowed to walk, the pitchers are all gone except for Cole and Kyle, and the rest of the position players are long gone. The current roster is terrible, but let's not exaggerate the problems.

Perhaps someone can just needle Papelbon with testosterone, get him suspended and move on. Management can say his recent outbursts were just from roid rage.
