I think a two-year deal for Chooch was gonna happen anyway, especially with the suspension and the injury lowering his value some. Hopefully they can start working Joseph in (the way they did Chooch back in the day) by early 2015

Or if Sandberg keeps bugging out, Choch as player-coach

It's funny you mention that. I was thinking last night that maybe they make Utley player/manager.

chiming in late on a couple of conversations...
on amaro:
if not for the howard gaffe, he would get a b grade from me. bad luck with health in the 2009 series makes it too easy to discount his amazing acquisitions of lee and pedro that year. charlie running halladay, rollins, and utley into the ground before the playoffs makes it easy to discounts the great value rubes got for the victorino, werth, and ruiz contracts and the cleverness of the lee-halladay-oswalt-lee sequence, all of which should have made 2010-13 better than they were. yeah, some of the disappointment came not only from a unnecessarily worn down core, but also from the chain reaction consequences of raj´s extra years for ibanez and polonco and the weak trade of lee. still, the non-howard positives from ruben outweight the negatives, and the howard effect only hit in 2012. once it became clear that halladay and utley were near their expiration dates, he started retooling, and i think he´s done a pretty good job so far. he could still end up failing (the longer evil remains on the team the lower the grade, and making the right call on a papelbon trade is huge), but he´s well positioned to both dump salary and fill holes with trades.

on asche:
i think he´ll be a solid mlb regular soon, but he needs to have at least to the trade deadline to get more reps at aaa. if the phils aren´t legit contenders at the deadline, young should go as well as papelbon, so asche can go through his mlb growing pains in a meaningless august-september. if he flops, fransden and galvis can hold the fort. if the phils are in a playoff race, they won´t trade paps till the offseason and young is probably better than asche this year so its a good excuse to hold asche back till september.

You guys are serious? A 2-year deal for Chooch? He'll be 35 and 36. Catchers don't play at 35 and 36.

Let's see if he can hit at all off adderall.

He doesn't have the wear and tear of most catchers that age and is by all accounts terrific behind the plate and in the locker room. And with Kratz and the young guys coming up soon, no need to spend $1M or whatever on a Schneider type

Who would you prefer?

I'd prefer that of course but assumed he could get two somewhere. Hopefully I'm wrong on that

I'd certainly offer chooch arb and let him shop around. i think he'd likely end up elsewhere in that scenario, if he finishes this year with typical production

can't offer him arb unless you mean you wanna give him that 12-13 million offer or whatever
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

isnt that just to get the draft pick in case he leaves? im pretty sure the minimum offer used to be 90% of what he made the final year of the contract but im not sure with the new rules

I thoughT there was a cap on how much a player's salary can be raised through arb?

yeah but that would be the advantage of offering him arb previously, so I thought that's what joe table was getting at

now you might as well just do what FTN said, the one-year deal with an option
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

“These guys like to beat us maybe as much as we like to beat them,” Davey Johnson said of the Phillies. “But I hate to lose in this ballpark, boy, I hate to lose to the Phillies. You know, they’ve always been a great team, but we’re a better team. We need to beat these guys.”

Ballsy of Davey to claim they're the better team.

My hatred of them subsided a little because they've pretty much been mediocre this year.
Thanks Davey, my hate is back.
