I'm just amused he thinks the Phillies have always been a great team.

“These guys like to beat us maybe as much as we like to beat them,” Davey Johnson said of the Phillies. “But I hate to lose in this ballpark, boy, I hate to lose to the Phillies. You know, they’ve always been a great team, but we’re a better team. We need to beat these guys.”

Well the Phils did finish 2nd behind his '86 Mets, so there's that. Who cares that they were almost 22 games out. Still 2nd!

MLB Rumors...

Buyers should not expect Papelbon to be available, Gammons further tweets. He cites an unnamed GM as saying that the Phillies are unlikely to deal their closer or star pitcher Cliff Lee given "their pending TV deal."

Makes total sense. Well, except for the facts that the pending tv deal will not restock the depleted talent pipeline, nor will trading those guys away decrease the value of the tv deal.

I heard Gammons on WIP. It was a pretty vague report about a few GMs mentioning the Phils' upcoming TV deal. That probably pertains more to Lee (as we figured) than Papelbon or any of the short-termers

He also said the Sox would definitely want Pap. Farrell loves him

If the team thinks that Papelbon will have any effect on the TV deal, it is obvious that this club's management is even more diluted than we think. I'd venture that almost every single fan realizes that Papelbon is a luxury that this team cannot have, and if moving him gets the team a good player, it is for the best. If Papelbon can yield Castellanos or Bradley in return, it is a no brainer move.

In other words, if Dombrowski wants Pap, he is going to have to pay for him. It could well be that Amaro realizes that he was messed over in the Pence deals and it won't happen again.

Deluded and diluted.
