If we agree to pay for his final year of school, does that come out of slot money?

Deadline is 5PM ET today.

Still unsigned for Phillies in the First 15 Rounds:
5th LHP Ben Wetzler - still negotiating according to Callis
6th OF Jason Monda - has indicated he will not sign
11th LHP Denton Keys - probably has to wait until the Phillies nail down Wetzler
12th RHP Griffin Jax - has already enrolled at Air Force Academy
13th OF Joey Martarano - going to Boise State to play football. There was talk of a 100K deal where he would play baseball for Phils during next summer but hasn't materialized.

Callis tweeting that we signed 11th Rounder Denton Keys and bonus pushes into the penalty tax. No word on Wetzler though we don't have much room to go overslot on him.

What does the tax mean? Does it impact future drafts?

Assuming that Wetzler is a slot signing and Monda is a lost cause, the Phillies have 235K of extra pool value to play with for signings after the 10th round. If they can finalize the Martarano deal at 100k, great, please do. I could see Keys getting the whole 235K (i.e. a 335k bonus). Don't know if Jax is a lost cause at this point. Maybe Child is signable after the CWS.

So the Phillies went 15K over their pool budget?

I know someone talked about the penalty for that somewhere in this thread or the other draft thread, but I can't imagine it is that severe.

Wetzler didn't sign. Hope the guy enjoys his 10k bonus next year.

They just pay 75% of 15K as a penalty

"Any team that exceeds its pool by 0 to 5% must pay a 75% tax on the amount of the overage. Any team that exceeds its pool by more than 5% but less than 10% must pay a 75% tax on the amount of the overage AND loses a first round draft pick. Any team that exceeds its pool by more than 10% but less than 15% must pay a 100% tax on the amount of the overage AND loses a first round draft pick AND loses a second round draft pick. Any team that exceeds its pool by more than 15% must pay a 100% tax on the amount of the overage AND lose two first round draft picks."

Very happy with the draft but not signing your 5th and 6th round picks in this new system is just stupid. The combined bonus pool for those picks was $551,200. You get a couple of college seniors for 10K each and you have money to get a top 75 kid after the 10th round.

Yeah they fucked those two up. Not sure why they drafted monda in the first place. Who knows what wetzler is doing. Thought he looked decent at the CWS. Heard some rumblings about a bad back but then he said he hadn't even heard from the Phils since his season ended. Can't waste top 10 picks, especially two of them.

Yes well they signed a guy I'd much rather have than those jrs in the 11th, and got another HSer late. Not like they missed out on some hot shot slot signable doods in the 5th and 6th

Just to clarify, they had spent 160k on Viza, so they had only 175k in pool room. So they went 75k over on Keys and will pay like another 55k in tax.

Yeah, the screwed up Wetzler and Monda pretty bad. You cant have both the highest and second highest unsigned no protected picks. Tts screwing up. Better to sign a compete stiff for 5k and use the pool room elsewhere.

Despite that screw up though, they did a better job of getting fair value for their first 5 picks than in the past.

Still think they had better drafts than th Braves, Nationals and Marlins. Mets were probably a smidge better.

But it does kinda suck leaving value on the table.

Now go sign Encarnacion on August 9th.

UAB commit

"We first saw Venn at the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Top Upperclassmen event, and immediately targeted him as the outfielder we would love to have in this recruiting class," head coach Brian Shoop said. "Venn was exactly what we were looking for -- a left-handed hitter who can run, hit for power and who can also defend the field at a high level. We really believe that there was no better fit as a player at UAB than Venn and we have to no doubt that he will have a great college career as a Blazer before he begins his professional career."

Biter was a key contributor in Rossview winning back-to-back District and Tournament Championships the past two seasons, along with a runner up finish in the Regional Tournament. During the 2012 season, Biter garnered 10 AAA All-District Team honors and was named to the The Leaf - Chronicle All-Area Team.

The Blazers recruited him as a centerfielder and with a shot at batting in the leadoff position or No. 2 hole in their lineup eventually.

"I don't want all of this to go to my head," Biter said. "I still have a ton of room for improvement and I know I can get better. All this stuff has been nice and it's been a crazy ride the past few months but I have to remain grounded and understand I haven't done anything yet."
