This could be the Justin Germano fiasco all over again!!

Welty is the third ranked LFer in the Oriole organization according to BP. The Phillies don't even have a third ranked guy in LF. They don't have a second ranked guy either. So this Welty guy fills a need.

Although Rodriguez was once high on my favorite prospect list, I'm not sure there is much of a chance his stuff will play at the highest levels. He is only 22 but at some point they would have to put him on the 40 man and I don't think he makes it.

They have a lot of pitching prospects who passed right by Rodriguez last season.

Wish him well as a Oriole.

His career BB% in the minors is 9% which I think is above average.

Drew a lot of walks when he played for Perth in the Aussie League. He may be a facing the Aussie pitcher specialist. There are more and more Aussie pitchers around so I applaud this astute move.

That's good news. Here are the respective ranks in batting BB for the Phils' minor league affiliates last year:

Lakewood: 9th of 14 teams
Clearwater: 11th of 12
Reading: 12th of 12
LHV: 14th of 14

More important than how many filler guys in the minors are hackers is how the top prospects fare:

Quinn showed he was willing to take walks. Joseph isn't particularly selective but doesn't hack as much as Valle. Asche isn't a hacker but doesn't draw tons of walks. Franco is too early to tell. Ruf, of course, walks quite a bit as does Greene. Tocci is only 16 so who knows what he will be although he reportedly has a pretty good idea of the strike zone. Hernandez isn't really special in this regard but he's kind of a slap hitting infielder. Walding is a tool shed whose OBP was 100 points above his BA so that's good I guess.

Rupp walked at a pretty decent rate. Collier reportedly has a good plate approach and walks at a decent rate. Altherrrrr is another tool shed. Not too hacky but not special either. Gillies, when he actually plays, has had a .395 career pro OBP. Cozens is another tool shed. He walked at a decent clip. Plus, he'll probably kick my ass if I say anything bad about him. Pullin has a great approach, walks a lot and had a .403 OBP.

Hudson is awful.

I wouldn't conclude that the Phils don't value patience at the plate or OBP based on the above.

Just did a rough count of weekday day games this year and there's only like 6 or 7 depending on if you want to count July 4th or the opener at 4:00 being a "day game" etc., there were about 17 last year. Fewer games for people to miss during work hours this year, yay!
