Yup, that's what I was getting at when I said that his sticking with them leads to better relationships, which is a good thing. He has shown willingness to work in new guys though, so you're right, I think.

I'll ask again which OBP machines they should have brought in instead to fill out the roster. Swisher is the only one that springs to mind, and that would have been a much, much costlier move.

Again, I'm concerned about all the talk of "contact" hitters and the importance of hitting .300. But the market isn't what it used to be, in general and for corner-OF production and OBP specifically. Blows that Dom Brown hasn't developed like we'd hoped to this point but he and Ruf will have the opportunity to give us a big boost

I think there's quite a large spectrum between "on base machine" and "Delmon Young"
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

Is there? His career OBP is almost exactly last year's league average (.319). He's fallen short of that the past two years, but that's why we were able to sign him for less than a twelfth of the commitment Jim Bowden predicted

last year's league average applies to last year. not the years preceding them.

There are no awards for lowest payroll. And, even if there were, the Phils are never going to win it. If a player's not increasing your chances of winning the World Series, the fact that he's a bargain means little.

I realize that man. But clearly the game has a changed a bit with regard to the availability of high-OBP corner-outfield bangers

Hopefully Brown and/or Ruf grow into one

He greatly increased the Tigers' chances in October.

Who knows

Again, I was speaking to OBP trends and availability, which was Monkeyboy's main complaint. Not taking ownership of the Young signing in particular

I understand we're not going to find some .400 OBP corner OF on the market for $750,000. What are we talking about? We're in the Delmon Young thread. He's awful and shouldn't have a guaranteed contract for any team, especially mine.

I was responding to Monkeyboy's and then Woody's posts, and then you responded to me?

I'll see that and raise you that he had no other offers remotely close to the Phils', since he's clearly a better fit for an A.L. team. But that doesn't mean we're all gonna die

p.s. There are reports the Rays seriously considered him. Somehow I think the blogger/pundit/poster reax to that would have been a little different (even accounting for them having a DH spot)

Yes we are. It's only a question of when.

then i pointed out that comparing his career OBP to last year's league average was faulty. that's it. it's just not a great way to make this argument. especially because he had his worst year last year

it would have been right in line with their market-busting acquisitions of rapist Josh Lueke and birther racist Luke Scott
