How long are you staying? If you're doing a week there are still some cottages on the beach you can rent. I can forward you an email. Very affordable. Cheaper than a hotel.

Look for something in the motel district. I've done the sta and pla twice and this other place across the street once. Like 100 a night or something. Sta and pla was just completely renovated this off season.

gotcha. looks like a holiday inn express close by too.

the airport looks like 15 miles to the ballpark area and the beach looks close too. just trying to figure if i should bother with a rental car or not

Rental car is nice if you want to explore the town or go to some nearby areas such as Tarpon Springs and John's Pass (shop and restaurant areas). Not sure when you're going, but the Phillies play a few games against Toronto in Dunedin, which is very close to Clearwater.
