sigh... eric seidman has a disappointing column over at brotherly glove. claims it would be better to bat shane first instead of rollins. its disappointing because he's both a phan and lead writer for fangraphs, and manages to show that he places an outdated bit of stathead gospel ahead of both a considerable body of evidence every phan should know about jimmy and ahead of a bunch of sabrmetric research that confirms that the best all-round hitters belong in the 2-4 spots, as long as the team has a very good baserunner with passable on base skills to bat first. jimmy is a little low on the on-base side, but he remains high on the sb rate and % numbers and has a history of using his power effectively to drive in bottom of the order guys who get on base. the leadoff obp nazi's have been ignoring this for years.

read before you snark. check the article. apparently there are already rumors of charlie moving rollins back to leadoff.

lineup construction, in general, is overblown. sure with this team there is less margin for error, but it still really doesnt matter. unless charlie does something dumb like bat galvis in the top 3 of the order, its not going to matter all that much.

the anti-pierre sentiment on this board has actually turned me in to a juan pierre fan, and i find myself really rooting for him.

kinda works that way with me and polanco/kendrick, but being a fan of juan pierre is hard to imagine.
i honestly think that he is the only player i have ever hated for something other than being an ass.

Get over it. The guy is playing well at the moment, and once that stops and/or Mayberry or Nix gets their shit together, he'll be a valuable bench piece.

I know this is said a lot, but I don't believe this. Just one example from googling. Here's a fangraphs article that says an optimized lineup would score .3 runs per game more than the Rollins leadoff lineup. That's a pretty big difference:

Wait, what? 3-14 with no BB and no XBH is playing well? And I don't think he's making up for it with his glove...

The two-out hit Sunday was huge, and the hit last night jumpstarted that inning (along with the fortunate call at 2B)

If he's hitting .210 a month from now, I reserve the right to change my mind

Pierre's BABIP is .231 (career .313). He's been hitting the ball sharply and could easily have another couple of hits.

I don't get it. Whatever anybody thought of the guy before, whatever he may have done before, Juan Pierre is a Phillies and he's cheap. Why not root for the guy? Are Nix and Wigginton so exciting with such a high upside that we'd rather see them playing? Is Pierre blocking Dom with his 4-20, no XBH and .504 OPS in the minors? It just seems we're a little too invested in having our opinion that Pierre stinks confirmed. But I'd rather be happy than right.
