Random FM Musings of Phillies Baseball

Pineda doesn't belong with the Phils top 3 either. He's really good but he isn't there yet. He has two big pitches and can dominate at times. But he loses it a bit too often right now. I don't know. He had a bunch of 5 and 6 inning starts last season. He had a three game stretch in July in which he gave up 19 runs in 15 2/3 innings. He didn't finish out the season strong.

He's really young and he could have a great future but he isn't a Halladay/Lee/Hamels quality pitcher yet.

No, I said that we have a sizeable advantage at 2 and 3. The Yanks 2 and 3 would be the 5th and 6th best pitchers of the 10. The Phillies have a clear rotation advantage. I'd take the Phillies, but I can see someone taking the Yankees. It is at least a plausible argument. The Giants? That's not a plausible argument to me.

Just as a final point, our pen accounted for 27% of IP last year, that's it, 27%. So no matter how good the other team's pen is, it's just not important enough to take back the advantage of our rotation.

They were 2 or 3 last year too.

Our rotation is better no? It accounted for 73% of our IP last season, the Yankees pen accounted for 32% of their IP. So if the rotation is roughly twice as important than the pen and usually a bit more, then surely our having the better rotation removes any plausibility for taking the Yanks? Unless of course we had the Orioles or Astros pen, but we don't. No matter how you compare the two teams, the rotation comes first, and whomever has the better rotation comes out on top unless there's a serious problem with the pens.

If the Phils won 130 games, the Yanks would still be #1.

Jesus, get over it man. I'm saying that it is at least a plausible argument that I wouldn't dismiss out of hand and you're treating that statement as me saying I agree that the Yankees pitching staff is better than the Phillies. Christ, I said the Phillies are better and I pointed out why.

You're arguing over the rankings in a video game for God's sake.

It's the offseason, I'd argue over anything during the offseason, I get easily bored with no baseball to watch.

Oh, I forgot to mention this... They ranked our hitting at #3. Clearly Sony thinks we don't need anymore bats.

I actually don't mind the Yankees that much. Being in different leagues helps. Only took 10 years in NYC. Still upset over the 09 WS though. We really had our chances to beat them and be back to back champs. Damn Matsui. And the frigging overhanging camera too.

Now, I never had much affinity for the Sixers and none for the Knicks, but recent events have caused me to follow the Knicks a little more. They might be the first NY team to convert me.

Howard medical update from BP:

Ryan Howard, PHI (Left Achilles Surgery)

Howard’s recovery from surgery on his torn left achilles tendon has been a rollercoaster ride. He was spotted taking grounders from a stationary position as well as running late last week, but with a limp. Subsequently, it was revealed that one of the stitches had a seroma forming around it. While this sounds ominous, a seroma is merely a pocket of fluid very similar to a cyst. This far out from surgery, the stitches involved are not the ones that you see on the skin’s surface, but rather a buried stitch used to close tissues deeper under the skin; the cyst developed become the body views it as a foreign invader. The body begins to “spit the stitch,” attempting to push it out of the body. This is not at all uncommon following surgery, particularly plastic surgery or mastectomies, and is different from an abscess in that it is not infected. They can be drained, but anytime you introduce a needle into the skin there is a chance infection will set in.

Howard is already in the batting cage and performing well. Even though the seroma qualifies as a setback, it is not much of one unless it becomes infected. For those asking about his limp, it is the result of being immobilized for a few months after surgery; his normal range of motion will come back over time.

Polanco (as of now) and Cliff Lee are apparently fine.

Yeah, wondering when someone was going to point that out. Claiming Nova is better is not based on past performance, and ZIPS and various other projection systems agree that Worley is likely to do better this year.

For those of you eager for some Phillies baseball, the MLB Network will carry no less than 16 of their spring games (many of them same-day delayed at very odd hours), 15 from the Grapefruit League and one from the On Deck series.
