A compendium of Crashburn's posts would serve as an excellent case study in radicalism.

At the end of the day they're all intangibles, some measurable and explainable, others not so much.

it's literally impossible to measure an intangible. "measurable" is an antonym of "intangible"

@ Barry

"Intangible" is and has always been a misnomer. There would be no way they would have proponents and opponents if they were truly intangible.

I think any effects of the intangibles are dwarfed and obscured by chance and luck. Good luck teasing that stuff out.

Based on Hiroki Kuroda's deal with the Yankees, an NL GM thinks Roy Oswalt could be had for about $9MM for one year. There were rumblings this week suggesting Oswalt's current asking price may be even lower.

Intangible literally means you can't touch it. It is more generally used to mean things you can't perceive directly with your senses. But you can measure things you can't perceive with your senses indirectly. It might be harder and there may be more validity and reliability problems, but you can do it. Things like consumer confidence or approval ratings of public officials can't be touched or sensed tangibly, but they can be and are measured all the time.

Veteranosity isn't at all intangible, indeed, it's really easy to measure. Now, has anyone examined whether or not there's a statistical relationship between wins and team veteranosity?

It's a pretty simple regression--hold all the other stuff (obp, slg, siera, and so forth) and see if years of major league experience has a measurable effect.

To be sure, it's unlikely to be linear, so you need one of those more fancy regression techniques, but still, not that tough.

I think the BP folks (and others) did some studies that showed zero positive effect of veteranosity in the post-season (when veteranosity is most valued).

I think the operable thought chain is that if these alleged intangibles don't provide a measurable effect, then they are worthless and usually aren't worthy of the connotation in which they are used. After all, it's the results that matter in professional baseball.

Not that there are non-performance areas that aren't important, though. If having a guy on your team makes other guys sign more autographs or visit more kids in hospitals, that's a good thing. But intangibles are always spoken of in a way that indicates they make the team perform better on the field.

I'll give an example- I was just reading a book where they mention a guy that had 5 or 6 300+ seasons in the fifties (or somewhere back there). Then they fired his easygoing manager and brought in a task master. the guys then plummeted and was out of baseball in a couple years. Intangible, but measurable. That's the kind of things saberboys want to see to believe in the intangibles.

I'll go back to that book and try to find the exact names and figures. Next time I visit the reading room.

Smug says he wants to add another lefty reliever, and looking at the FAs, there's SAFECO space cadet Mike Gonzalez, Arthur Rhodes, Hong-Chih Kuo, Damaso Marte and Trever Miller. Dunno if Rhodes or Kuo are still interested in pitching, Gonzalez is basically Romero on crack, and Marte missed the last two seasons after shoulder surgery. Miller? meh
