good point. Though I vaguely remember earlier this year some beat writer saying how teams generally prefer to leave a spot open just in case. No idea why that'd be really

Possibly because the #40 guy stinks anyway. Who are our bottom guys anyways?

Oh wow. Boomer answered me before I typed the question. Nice gardening!!

The last spot on the 40 man roster is reserved for Kyle Farnsworth who was placed on waivers today by the Rays.

Finally Mathieson is free from being jerked around by this org so he can be the cy young middle reliever he's cable of being.

Friday's winning pitcher, Vance Worley , is the first Phillies rookie to win six games over a seven-game stretch since Bob Walk in 1980.

Mathieson will be retained. He is going through optional waivers. Will remain on 40-man roster when he clears. Procedural move.

Might change after today's games but I just noticed that your Philadelphia Phillies are the MLB leaders in third-order record (71.1- 40.9), ten-thousandths of a percentage point better than the Red Sox. Braves have fallen off a lot lately and are now tied with the Brewers. DBacks have just recently passed the Giants but they're both worse than the Mets. We might be better off playing the West winner than the Central winner at this point. The Rangers had been keeping it close with the Phils, Sox and Yankees but have also fallen off lately.

Winning hearts and minds

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=A ... bes-080511

Just as Wall Street Journal sports-humor writer Jason Gay finished summarizing the brow beating that Philly has been laying on New York when it comes to signing top talent (Cliff Lee, Nnamdi Asomugha), along comes the latest survey from E-Poll and Nielsen showing that four of Americans’ 10 favorite baseball players hail from the City of Brotherly Love.

Topping the list is Phillies ace Roy Halladay(notes), who appeals to 70 percent of baseball fans. He’s joined in the top ten by Lee and second baseman Chase Utley(notes) (tied for No. 4 with 57-percent appeal), and first baseman Ryan Howard(notes) (No. 10; 52-percent appeal).

watching the game yesterday and watching Howard go up 3-0 in the count and then make an out, I "felt" like this was something he did more than he should. So I looked at his sOPS numbers for this season and then his career

This season his splits have been really weird.

its like hes been drilled that he has to swing all the time. and that taking a walk is a poor result.

I wonder if this is at least partly due to the time he was in a line-up with Valdez, Martinez, Sardinha, Francisco, pre-better play Raul and Mayberry. He might have pressed thinking that he is the only one who can drive in a run and in that situation, a walk is not a great result. He's wrong, but the thought process is understandable.
