I was going to give this its own thread. This brings me back to my admittedly crazy theory that brain tumors are somehow more common in baseball players.

Byrum Saam, an old time Phillies announcer when I was young, used to always say: "That's the wonderful thing about baseball, you never know." (He also had variants like "I guess you never do know." and It's a wonderful thing" and stuff like that).

Nowadays we have "deadly accurate" PECOTA projections and third order wins and "advanced metrics" and of course babip.

Byrum wouldn't know a babip from a bippy but he was right about this: You never know. And it's a wonderful thing.

Baseball wouldn't be the great game it is if we actually DID know everything -- or even most of what was going to happen.

For example, the Cleveland Indians have the best record in baseball. That's so cool. `

This is a team that likes trading away Cy Young winners for Lou Marson and utility infielders and pitchers with bad shoulders. And their best players are hurt. And their next best players are slumping and hitting .216 and stuff like that. They are playing the undead Austin Kearns. Their best pitchers are Justin Masterson and some guy named Tomlin.

And they just swept the Reds and are 29-15.

I guess you never do know.

And it's a wonderful thing.

Did not know that Macho Man played minor league baseball.

But unbeknownst to many of his fans, Poffo, who died Friday in an auto accident in Florida, began his athletic career as a professional baseball player in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He signed with the Cards as a catcher out of high school and later spent time in the Reds and White Sox organizations. Poffo played 289 games in four minor league seasons, batting .254 with 16 homers and 66 RBIs

So the 4 SPs currently in the majors we traded for Blanton, Lee, Halladay and Oswalt are Outman, Carrasco, Drabek and Happ. I'm not sure which quartet I'd rather have. Are you guys sure?

Outman has had a horrible time coming back from the TJ. 38 hits and 27 BBs in 37 2/3 IP.

Speaking of the Sacramento River Cats, Cardenas has hit very well in AAA for the first time so far (.898 OPS). He's mostly a LF/DH now which reduces his value a lot. He's only 23 though.

Also Michael Taylor is starting to hit some.

Yup. Another great point. He was like this hot shot hitting prospect. Then he looked like maybe a big bust. Now he's looking kinda good again. It's a wonderful thing.

I read the BP team thingie from their annual after writing the above post. The author wrote that one thing for certain was the Indians would not have a winning team in 2011. He could be right. They could crash and burn at any time. They probably are NOT that good a club yet (though they have some talent near ready). But that's the wonderful thing about baseball -- you never know.

I'm an Indians fan and hope they survive and prosper. I guess you can forgive BP for not foreseeing that Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner would come back from the dead and both post 176 OPS+. Having them both on the DL, as they are now, would have been a safer bet. But the Indians swept the Reds anyway,a nd they may make it back to help them..

Pronk has an oblique strain like about half the players in MLB. He will miss three or more weeks I guess. The guy is always hurt.

Sizemore is supposed to be back pretty soon I think but he's always hurt too. He had the microfracture surgery stuff which has to hurt.

promo fail

The Milwaukee Brewers were hoping for an enthusiastic response to their ''Where's Bernie?'' promotional program. They probably weren't expecting early morning fan stakeouts, Internet auctions and isolated reports of lawn-ornament hoarding.

About 1,400 lawn ornament statues depicting Milwaukee's ''Bernie Brewer'' mascot were hidden across Wisconsin early Tuesday morning, some with tickets, prizes and player autographs attached.

It didn't take long before social networking websites were buzzing with complaints about fans staking out workers and snapping up the statues as soon as they were hidden. One Twitter user posted a photo of at least 10 statues stuffed in the trunk of a car, drawing the ire of fellow fans. Several of the statues were up for sale on eBay, with bids topping $200.

Brewers officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rangers reportedly fired their rookie TV pxp guy, some of you may remember from his "It's a home run! er, it will bring home a run at least" this weekend. He had tons of gaffes like that, really just in over his head.

At least he didn't yell at you. I liked him for that. Pretty EZ to tune out which is a big plus as well.

Actually he did yell, maybe not as often as T-Mac but he'd do it at very strange times during games. I watch a lot of their games, believe me he was a distraction.
