A day after he picked up his second victory of the season in a 4-3 win over the Pirates, Oswalt was on the field at Minute Maid Park in pregame stretch when a team employee told him about the tornado that had touched down in his hometown.

“I was thinking, maybe it tore some shingles off,” Oswalt said. “But it was gone. Everything was gone. The closet was the only thing left.”

The closet, which Oswalt helped build as an addition to the home, was where his mother, Jean, and her dog ran for cover. When the destruction around her was through, Jean Oswalt and her pet emerged from the closet without a scratch.
