Barry Jive wrote:Well, point is: They can't afford to let Wright and Dickey go to free agency because they have very little in the pipeline that comes close to their talent right now. They have to get at least one and probably both, and they can probably do it. Santana's and Bay's salaries are gone after next season. Pelfrey is gone if he's not non-tendered this off-season, which would cut a bloated salary. Frank Francisco is gone. Beyond that, the only guys they have under control are Manny Acosta (entering arb 2) and Jon Niese, who will have $21.15 million left on his deal at that point. That's the entirety of their salary commitments in 2014 (excepting buyouts for Santana and Bay).
He says that knowing he's going to get Wright and Dickey, knowing those will be large commitments for the club. But I'm fairly confident they're going to have their fair share of cash to throw around at a certain point. Wright and Dickey are enough to start build a team around, and they can certainly find a willing taker on the free agent market who will at least acquit them of the Jason Bay signing.

Bonilla is also being paid $500,000 annually by the Baltimore Orioles until 2015 for a similar buyout and he holds a “special assistant” job with MLB that pays him $200,000 a year.
