I forgot about that post. If it makes you feel any better, I had to look up how to spell it.

Thanks the the Marlins' fire sales, it's no longer a foregone conclusion that the Mets will finish last in the NL East in 2013. So there's that.

"You don't add anything to Niese. Wil Myers could be a beast, but even just trading Niese alone is a HUGE gamble."

"Don't trade Niese. As great as it would be to acquire Myers, the potential of a Harvey, Wheeler & Niese trio for the foreseeable future is as important.

Start with Dickey, plus one of Familia or Mejia & Valdespin, who with our luck, could wind up posting Jeff Kent type of production out there. "

"Some of you guys have made trade proposals in this thread terrible enough to qualify yourselves as candidates for a future general manager position.

Niese plus a secondary prospect for a prospect that hasn't even reached the majors yet? Okay, I might consider that.

But the idea of throwing in Wheeler or giving up Davis and Dickey... I really hope you guys were joking, because if you were serious, you probably should stop posting. "

"As most have said, you do Niese, but not much else in addition.

Niese would be KC's undisputed ace; at least he misses bats, unlike Hellickson."

Niese's ERA over the last 5 years:
7.07
4.21
4.20
4.40
3.40

UNDISPUTED ACE. Can't trade a 4+ ERA dude who is only under team control for ~2 more years for one of the best prospects in baseball. TOO RISKY.

e: ok he's actually signed through 2018, but still, he's not that good.

Are the Mets out of their fucking minds? $140M and 8 YEARS for 30 year old David Wright when they are negotiating against themselves?

The only plausible explanation for this (forget excuse) is that they are convinced/terrified that if Wright makes it to FA, he is a lock to sign here.

EDIT: So, OK, it is seven years, but it is to begin after this year's contract, so he'd be a Met for 8 more.

I just read it in the NY Daily News where I was getting lunch. They seemed to be suggesting it was their last/best.

I should certainly hope so.

They're not really negotiating against themselves, imo. To keep him, they have to give him as much or more as he could possibly get on the free market.

Probably a bad baseball decision but a defensible business decision given how things have gone there recently

I find it hard to believe they went from low-balling (PiPed) to that in a day
