That was awful advice. Best advice is to watch every episode of this series, you won't be disappointed. The 2nd season isn't quite as good as #1 and it shifts gears pretty significantly but it's still fantastic and well worth watching.LongDrive wrote:I fianlly watched the 1st season of The Wire. I agree with this. I think a significant amount of the flak #2 gets was from the change in story line--switch from the Barksdale crew to the Docks Union/Greeks. It caught me off guard initially as well but it was still 1000x's better than anything else on TV so I persisted and a few episodes in I was enjoying it as much as I had the first season.Houshphandzadeh wrote:I think the whole conventional wisdom that the second season is average is really silly. I love the whole series, but if anything, the first season is the worst; there's a lot of pretty tangible and awkward voice-finding, like the obvious and over-the-top scene where the Barksdale crew is explained in chess pieces. Take out a few bad "Stringer be like the queen" lines and Bodie's final "Not if you're a smart-ass pawn" would be more powerful. And how many times an episode do you hear: "It's all in the game."? I still love the season, but there were some obvious growing pains.
I think the show's improvement was strictly linear.
