Ruben Amaro Jr. Named GM. Official Announcement Monday

Postby phdave » Sun Nov 30, 2008 16:09:09

Check out the comments to David Murphy's High Cheese post about the hiring of Amaro. And I thought reaction here was emotional. I didn't see this until yesterday.

This particular comment caught my eye:

All the clueless little effers here who throw around words like yes-man" and Ed Wade clone are the same easily lead automatons that will vote Obama on Tuesday. Arbuckle is not an outsider he has been with the Phils since the early 90's, to succeed in business you need to be able to work with everyone, and sometimes that means doing what the bosses want you to do. I am sorry if you are all frustrated low level employees who always think the successful folks above you are stupid, but reality is they are the smart ones, you are the drones. Drones, hmmm, exactly what Obama wants. Hitler wanted drones too.

IIRC Jon Stewart did a whole bit on the frightening similarities between Obama and Hitler. As another example, one need look no further than seke2's avatar to see that Obama likes dogs--just as Hitler did!

This thread has gone off the rails. I think everything that could be said about Amaro's hiring has been said.

Since I lack the power to lock threads I would like to make the following observations.

1. So far, Amaro has not done anything stupid. True, he hasn't done anything yet, but so far there are no actual trades or deals to evaluate.

2. This team did just win a world series, so they must be doing some things right.

3. Lots of people though Gillick was not doing much, and that Amaro was really running the show for at least the last year (which would mean that the worst deals of the Gillick era (Eaton and Abreu) were not on his watch) and that again, this team just won a world series.

4. There do not need to be any major changes in the line up or in the rotation. They need a #4 or better pitcher, and they have not signed a credible left fielder yet.

5. It isn't surprising that Amaro will not be very aggressive this year, and that he will hold his cards close to his vest. It is a mistake to criticizen a GM on the basis of less than half baked rumors dreamed up by so-called sports reporters who are doing little more than making up stuff because there's no real new to report.

Who is the number three starter? And I'd say not having a left fielder is a pretty big hole.

also, we've got the golson/mayberry trade. that's semi-significant, i'd say

Most people I think like that deal.

We've got 3 starting pitchers, and I'm assuming Moyer will come back, so he'd be #3.

The point is Amaro has given us no reason to flip out yet.

Most people aren't flipping out. And even if they were, it's not because of something Amaro has done. It's because of Amaro, period. For right or wrong, he has come to embody everything we dislike and suspect about the Phillies organization.

Oh, I understand what's going on here. It's just ridiculous, in my opinion. The team has had a winning record for the 5 years or so, they've been in the post season for the last two, and were close some other years. Finally, 2008 brought us to the promised land. I'm enjoying the World Series victory. That alone is enough for me to give the Phils the benefit of the doubt, at least until something bad happens.

I dunno, even if Amaro was a smart choice, it bugs me that they didn't seem to even consider anyone else for the job.

The Hitler Youtube video (which was first linked in this thread) is still active. I guess it did not get enough views to warrant removal. :(
