And I think it's really dumb to be counting on Myers as some sort of ace. He had a few excellent starts after his return, but then disappeared again in the playoffs. I think he'll be very inconsistent AGAIN next year. If we can get something good for him, I would trade him and go after someone in FA or trade. There are some decent 2nd tier guys out there and I wouldn't mind taking a cheap flyer on a guy like Patterson, assuming the price is good, the medical reports look ok, and we're not absolutely depending on him.

3B remains the best place for improvement, as Feliz was well below average last year and is more likely to get worse than better. IF we could get a young 3B in trade, it would really help make up for losing Burrell. I could then see going with a platoon in LF or RF.

To me, calling Brett Myers a disappearing act in the playoffs is quite inaccurate. After the first inning of the Milwaukee game, he was fantastic in that one. He quite frankly wasn't very good against LA, but pitched 7 innings of 3 run ball against Tampa. I couldn't have expected much more than that from him.

The first inning counts. He was ok against Tampa, you're right about that. For some reason, I thought he gave up more than that.

Anyway, he was more like a #4 in the playoffs. His problem has always been consistency and I see no reason to think he's going to put a complete solid season together. If they can get a young solid 3B or OFer for him, I would do it and then sign a FA pitcher to take his place.

In fairness to Brett, he did give up 3 runs in an inning against the Dodgers AFTER he got the third out. It's not really his fault the strikeout got away from Ruiz.

Bruntlett got close to a 1500 on the SAT and graduated from Stanford in three years. I'm sure there's some expertise he could lend to the franchise if he wanted to work in baseball after his playing days.

Is that true?

I'm trying to document it for you. I'm repeating something I heard on a Phillies game this year (might have been the other team's broadcast on Extra Innings). I'm pretty sure they said he scored 1460 on the SAT with a perfect math score. His Wikipedia profile says he has an economics degree from Stanford. The graduating in three years thing - that could be me remembering poorly, but I'm pretty sure I heard that.

Don't forget that Myers put up two straight seasons of near-ace-level pitching as a starter before the (misguided) conversion to a reliever. I think there's some track record there that suggests that he'll be better than what he showed overall in 2008.

Maybe he'll be inconsistent, but I recall a study, I think on Hardball Times, that said that a team would actually win more games behind an inconsistent pitcher with a 4.00 ERA than one who goes out and gives up exactly 4 runs every nine innings.

He was on DNL tonight. Highlights:

--Burrell will probably file for his free agency soon. He has not to this point given Amaro the sense that there will be a "home-town discount"

--Hamels is a "priority player" of course, but signing him long-term now is not a priority

--Signing Moyer is a priority

--Beyond the current roster, more pitching is the top priority

--Didn't want his first move to be the firing of Smith but wanted to do it face to face when he and Charlie had the chance

Director of scouting Marti Wolever isn't at the meetings, but a source said last night that he definitely will be back.

Guess the 1,000 times since April Burrell said he wants to be back is a little too subtle for Rubes?

That is interesting. outside of amaro's apparent disdain for sabremetrics, I'm most worried about the guys complete lack of people skills. Maybe that's an early indicator that he has some cop after all.

I definitely don't mind Amaro's arrogance. I think most people in his position are arrogant to a certain extent.

What I don't like is that he appears to be pretty bad at hiding his arrogance. He is a little too prideful for his own good. He knows he is smart but he doesn't have to give everyone a big FU everytime he talks. I do think a lot of you are being a little hard on the guy right now and in the end you could be justified. I hope you are all wrong.

Why not wait till he does something in concrete before acting like you can forecast his GM future?. Speculation is fun and part of being a fan but I just don't see any reason to believe that Amaro is going to be bad. I could very well feel different if he starts doing stupid shit but for God's sake give him a moment to be the GM. I defended Gillick pretty much the whole time and some of you guys acted like he was a complete douche during his tenure. If he did something it was attributed to the guy that is being blasted now.

Gillick's tenure was pretty solid whether Amaro was behind the curtains or not.

Anyone happen to catch Angelo Cataldi's interview of Randy Miller? Good lord. Miller sounds like a big time Arbuckle guy and Cataldi, whom I still like, brings people on to sort of push his agenda, but some of the stuff Miller said he heard about Amaro is just plain scary. Said he only went to meetings if Montgomery was there, the scouting staff has little respect for him, only went to scouting events if Gillick were there, etc. Not good stufff although he did give him a lot of credit for supposedly getting the Lidge trade done.

The entire interview is up on the WIP website. It's worth a listen.

I don't think anything Randy Miller says can be taken seriously at this point.

Sounds like Miller cultivated Arbuckle as his best source and now realizes he backed the wrong horse.

On the assistant general manager front, former Mets and Orioles GM Jim Duquette, former Royals assistant GM Muzzy Jackson and Orioles' director of baseball administration Scott Proefrock have joined former Reds GM Wayne Krivsky as candidates to fill the Phillies' assistant GM spot, under newly promoted GM Ruben Amaro Jr. A decision could come as early as next week.

My wife and I were watching SportsNight last night on Comcast and a clip of Rube comes on talking about Chase's hip. It might have been like 15-30 seconds or whatever. But in that short time my wife said "Who's that guy? I don't like him"

He can smug away all he wants as long as the Phils keep winning big. Key words here are "winning big".

I really want to hate him but there's just something inside of me that says, "Give him a chance."

I'm fairly confident in saying that if the Phillies hadn't just won a World Series, I'd be less easygoing about it. :|

I mean, really, it's not a congeniality contest.
