The video (still there with a whopping 2,981 views) suddenly got its first comment in 4 years. And the comment made it clear that the commenter had no idea what the video was about. At least he/she enjoyed it I guess. I have to learn to live with the consequences of having an aversion to making the targets of my jokes obvious.

Quotes from Monkeyboy...

Hmmmmm....

Ruben is a politician, not a baseball man. He's a corporate suckup, who may be good at contracts, but I wouldn't trust to build a major league team.

And I realize we don't really know what he'll do because he's never been in this position, but I think you can tell a lot about him by the reaction of people in the organization and his content-free double speak he's thrown our way over the past few years. As far as I can tell, he's an old school guy who thinks players that play like he played the game (poorly, but with gusto!) are the way to build championships. 5 years from now, we'll be looking back on a Sabean-like record of signing veterans who get their uniforms dirty, but get on base by accident.

I don't think he'll empty the farm. I'm more concerned the farm will slowly empty itself without Arbunkle and his scouts.

And Pitt's new ownership looks like they may know what they're doing. The fact that Green was cast aside makes me think he's probably worthless, so I hope he doesn't come our way.

You made that? I pretty much laughed all the way through it, if that's any consolation. My girlfriend is in Texas for the holiday and I even took the time to tell her about it on the phone when we talked last night.
That Hitler thing is still hilarious.

Most proud of the Pitt comment.

Geez, you must sit around waiting for me to post. I was going to PM you today to apologize for my comment about you not being funny. I tried to start that by posting that I loved the Hitler video. I had to shower first or maybe you wouldn't have had the time to post. Like I said, I was more proud of that Pitt comment. And I think most of us would say that the Giants are lucky bastards and we use them as an example of how the playoffs are a crapshoot. If not for the incompetence in their division, the Giants would have won nothing.

Anyway, sorry again about the not funny jab. You've always been one of my favorite posters, sincerely.

Check the vacation thread in a bit.

Really begs the question why he thought any pitcher outside of Philadelphia would even know who Ruben is

1997-2004 really were the salad days. It's such a shame we've had to suffer through 2009-2013.

We will look back at the Smug Era and cry. So smug. Just awful. He never could get us any pitching because he didn't understand it and his smugness kept us from getting Free Agents. Also we just sucked for 5 years. Sucked. Not like the glory days of this franchise in the 20s and 30s and 40s and 50s and 60s and early 70s and late 80s and most of the 90s.

Just too smug. And it was awful.

Missing John Quinn and Lee Thomas and Travis Lee and Omar Daal and mike Williams and Rico Brogna. Back in those days the Phillies knew what it took to win. Not like today when all we get is smugness.

Oh, please, with the strawman faux-whining bullshit.

The Phillies have sucked, historically. We get it. We all lived through it. The last several years, they haven't sucked. They've won a championship, lost another, made the playoffs multiple consecutive years. It's been awesome.

That's enough to satisfy some of you. Awesome. Enjoy it.

It's not enough for me.

We have (or had, in some cases) huge advantages and huge opportunities for a continued run of success. Talent. Money. Perception as a "real" destination. Prospects with perceived value. Momentum. We could have (should have) done a better job leveraging those advantages into a sustained run. Instead, we pissed much of it away, and after a pretty fucking boring .500 season, we're 5 games below .500. We don't appear to be building towards 2014 and beyond, either.

I appreciate that the "era" has been great (time period, not earned run average, though that's been great at times, too). I really do. But it doesn't excuse the fact that it hasn't been what it could have been, and that it's going in the wrong direction.

is it really strawman stuff when people are saying they hope we get swept by the Pirates? I think all of us aren't too happy with Rube, but some of us are sick of reading it a hundred times a day

Shore's post is well written and reasonable. But in the context of this thread, it's fair to point out how abjectly negative most were on PP and BSG around 2006. Remember the threads about Gillick destroying the franchise, and all the jokes about Amaro really running the team while he was napping? If people were way wrong about that -- and possibly selling Amaro way short to the extent he contributed to the mid to late 2000s -- they may be wrong about today's darkness

Also, I know no one wants to hear it, but the physical breakdowns of Halladay, Utley, and Howard were huge factors the past two years. And the only one many/most wouldn't have committed to was Howard, who realistically would have been replaced by someone like A-Gonzalez who wouldn't be saving us single-handedly

The bullpen has been the other huge factor. As bad as the Qualls (who's now pitching pretty well) and Durbin signings were, they were relatively low stakes. Adams was a big risk, but one I was fine with, given the circumstances. We've been almost comically unlucky with the young guys, and/or not developing them properly. Hard for me to buy the latter when Dubee (and, maybe, Nichols) has done such a great job with the young starters over the years
