Chase's edginess makes him cool... plus he is an animal advocate... kinda like a baseball version of Brad Pitt but with like cats not foreign kids.

Woodstock was in 1969. I was 12 then. Country Joe McDonald did the Fish cheer (Gimme and F -- Gimme a U etc). I remember it wasn't THAT big a deal.

I can't even remember when all the guys started cursing but it was before I was a teenager. We didn't do it in front of parents if we could help it. But cursing is not really all that new.

I remember knowing what a Steely Dan was at a pretty young age and stuff like that. Kids really weren't all that innocent in the olden days. I doubt it's changed much.

The official party line was it wasn't good to curse in front of kids back then too. And kids were suppposed to be protected from curse words and sex and all that horrible stuff. But we had the Vietnam war on the TV every night and riots in the streets and college kids being gunned down by scared National Guard kids. So the fact that we all heard and used curse words probably wasn't such a bad thing. Even if we weren't supposed to.

I curse way too much today. I wish I didn't curse hardly at all. But when I was growing up we all cursed a lot and my time in the Army didn't help. If I had to do it all over again, I would have liked to have been one of those guys who never cursed hardly at all so when they did it was really cool. Now it's just a vice I'm trying to be rid of.

The pic in the parade thread... looks like Moyer got a kick out of it, and his young son is right there.

Loved it. I thought Chase was trying to connect with the crowd, give them something special. It was an odd, kind of twisted respect and payback to the the fans.

Loved it. Cursing is not one of the big problems in our world. There are about a million others ahead of it.

Working class city. Working class fans. Working class language. He was respecting that.

Right on Chase.

I'm no fan of profanity, though like Smitty, I use it too much. But why is this such a big deal? Why do we have a 5 page thread on this? Why am I posting in it?

The answer to that last one is it's a dull Saturday night in Arkansas.

Funny thing--Lil' Vulture thinks she should be allowed to use the F word if Obama loses. We told her she's not.

Palmer's face in the picture is comic gold.

It's like he's reading the network apologies in his mind.

Bucky, if your son says "World $#@! Series" to my wife, I'll make sure he's not punished, and I'll even see if he can be rewarded.

Welll that didn't work out too well now did it. Of all the people to get confused, he had to pick the principal to say this too. :( Oh well, I guess one month's detention isn't too bad.

I sympathize with the parent with the eight year old next to him/her in the stadium or watching tv who was probably saying, "what did he say, what did he say?" or, worse, repeating it.

But I also think you have to look at the effect of the language.I hate casual profanity, which is usually used out of laziness and takes words that could be powerful, and often remain powerfully offensive to those to whom they can only denote their literal meaning, to convey the most banal and ill-considered thoughts. It's like using a shoe to try to drive a nail, because you can't be bothered to look in the basement for where you left your hammer. It doesn't do a very good job and wears out the shoe pretty quickly besides.

But profanity when used as an expletive can add powerful emphasis. and the reaction to Utley's use was mirth, approval and a powerful emotional release. It's hard to imagine other language he could have used to provoke this, and this is just the kind of reaction you want to provoke in a situation such as this, where people have gathered to celebrate and want to feel like the players are sharing similar emotions with them in regards to the the team's accomplishment.

So, by definition, Utley's use of the F word was "appropriate"-it conveyed well the emotion he was feeling to a crowd that wished to share in it.

Which is not to say that provoking middle schoolers to chant it in the halls is not an unfortunate side effect.

CafePress is littered with "World Fucking Champions" merchandise.
Most of it is pretty terrible. If only the Phillies/MLB were cool enough to license some merchandise
"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "
