Especially for all the kids in attendance.

Boy, it's amazing how being a father can change your outlook on things. It's f***ing unreal.

Do you let your kids see R-rated movies? Have they ever heard you use that word? I mean, I would understand the consternation if he went up and made a profanity-laced tirade. But, in a unique circumstance, a one-time, one-use thing... kids have to grow up some time. Most of them start hearing it at school by the second or third grade anyway (when i was in school, it became "OK" to curse in fourth grade --- and by that I mean no one would "tell on you" for using a four-letter word starting at that age).

The world ain't what it used to be when it comes to this stuff.

My kids are young enough that R is out of the question. My oldest is 10 and is just coming into PG-13 range. We do watch the news in front of him and sometimes the stories are just as bad as an R. They do hear the occasional curse slip by, but it is not something that we think is OK for use in the house. We don't hear it too much among their friends, but I'm sure they all know what they are and mean by this point.

It wasnt the best idea by Chase, but it's not a big deal either

When I was 10, I was in the fourth grade. Most of my schoolmates were 9 that year (1988-1989). I went to a Catholic school, I should note, in a very nice suburban neighborhood. Kids were cursing in the schoolyard beginning that year.

I can't believe the situation vis-a-vis cursing at school has gotten any better since 1989.

I mean, my parents didn't let me watch R-rated movies until I was basically old enough to rent them without me asking them (i.e., 17), but of course my father --- what's that line from A Christmas Story? --- "worked in profanity like some men worked in oils"? I would get in trouble if I cursed in front of them --- indeed, I still won't curse in front of them, but...

Chase's F-bomb isn't making any good little boys turn bad, you know what I mean?

It was totally awesome. Profanity has its place; properly used, it's reserved for the most extreme situations. Unfortunately, too many people only know three adjectives anymore, and two of them are dirty. But I would argue once-in-a-lifetime moments like the one that was happening today are the moments profanity exist for. It wasn't excessive, it wasn't repeated. There are "F" bombs in PG movies for goodness' sake. I was thinking of watching one of those movies today, in fact (Beetlejuice). The reason it gets into PG movies on occasion is because sometimes it's not really all that dirty. It's not like Chase was using it for its most explicit meaning --- it was just an intensive. If he were, i'd be more sympathetic to people. But it was basically meaningless in the context in which he used it. No one is going to have to explain to their children what "F---ing" means/is thanks to today.

So you still won't curse in front of your mom, but it's OK for Chase to?? That's the downside for me. Mostly ever male is going to curse. But they need to learn proper judgement on when it's appropriate and when it's not. This was definitely not appropriate. I don't care if he is Chase f#(#&)g Utley. Like Trent said, not a huge deal. But one that shouldn't be repeated.

Cursed by my own exaggeration. It's not that I never curse in front of Mom, but I certainly do not use casual profanity in front of her. I don't know... it was funny. Profanity isn't usually funny by itself, but humor is all about surprise... and it was definitely a surprise.

My kids are 10 and 7 and Ive told them that they are just words to me and it's the meaning that's most important. Basically, if they say "oh f@ck" I dont care, but if he were to be mean and say f@ck you to his brother then he'll get in trouble whether he uses a "bad" word or not. Honestly, what does it matter what words are used if they have the same meaning. You can hear "Frak" on BSG but we all know it means the same thing as "F@ck". So whats the difference? It stupid that we have words that will supposedly automatically offend people no matter what the intent of the speaker is. It's their problem not mine.

I always thought Werth looked like he belonged in Metallica or Moterhead or something, I like that his stylist apparantly agrees.

RT, but I bet your kids know not to use those words when talking to their teacher, right?

It wasn't too long ago that "sucks" and "blows" were heavy duty curses. Now they're everyday words. I don't have a problem with any words. But we live in a society and there's a decorum. I want my kid to learn that decorum- and if that changes, so be it, I'm not going to get pigheaded about the "old" way. But That Word is still on the wrong side of that line.

It's just not a good idea to get into the habit of being a foulmouth. It will limit you in most opportunities.

That said, this is completely different.

Heavens to Betsy. It was a little naughty. Lenny Dykstra driving drunk and running into a tree with Darren Daulton in the car, almost killing them both is disgraceful.

They did that in front of thousands of people and TV cameras

Just tell them it's an adult word. I heard the F bomb as a kid, but I still knew not to use it, even as a younger child.

I agree 100% with both sentiments. I've taught business writing courses in the past and will in the future. I've also taught college composition courses. I both, I always take a few minutes out of one class day to stress to students the importance of developing a reasonably sized vocabulary and to be able to speak and communicate without relying on profanity. Decorum is absolutely important.

And this was totally different.

The more you curse, the more likely you are to succeed in political consulting.

Probably marketing and any other repulsive profession, too.

Well said. And Utley is usually called one of the best role models in the game. It will be hard to call him that after he's yelling the F bomb in front of 10 thousand kids. I'd hate to see his reputation take a hit.

And this could cause punishment from the FCC since some of the networks were airing it, and bad publicity could come from that and other problems.

They know that in school and with other family members, etc that if they use those words they will then get in trouble. In some ways I think my kids may "curse" less as Ive demystified it.
