I BELIEVE

(the Phillies can go the whole year without losing by six runs)

Fuck it, I'm staying in. I would've enjoyed last year so much more if I hadn't quit on them so much during the season.

everyone is going to devote full attention, they are kidding themselves if they say otherwise.

the last 3 games helped me detach mentally.

I figured if we swept the Nats, even if the Mets swept, we'd be in prime position to go into Shea and come out even at worst.

We're 3 GB.

The Mets have gotten all kinds of lucky breaks this year, fluke seasons from washed up retreads, Delgado apparently back on the juice, and everything they throw at the wall is sticking since that dillhole Manuel took over.

Its not our year. The offense has been too inconsistent, the pitching has been wonderful for the most part, but our bullpen, which has been great for much of the season, has torpedoed 3 games in the last week.

Just not happening. If it does, awesome. But I'm not going to stress over it anymore.

If I was told I had a 1 in 5 chance of being hit by a truck over the next three weeks, I'd be tiptoeing around pretty lightly. Sounds good enough for me to keep it interesting, and I also think the wild card is going to at least come into play. I'm in for the duration or maybe, like Danny Ozark, one game more than that.

i think its a win-win...if we win, yay more playoffs. if we lose, less fans, higher draft picks, less fans at ALS night, cheaper ticket prices!

After the miracle win over the Mets last week put us back in first--holy fuck, was that really just eight days ago?--I was talking or e-mailing with one of my (all too many) Mets-fan friends, and I said that last year, the Phils suffered what seemed like dozens of devastating losses. Just soul-crushing defeats, usually of the come-from-ahead, bullpen-meltdown variety. The one that stands out for me was that afternoon loss in Atlanta about a year ago, but there were many, many others. Losses, in other words, like the one we hung on the Mets that night.

And it seemed like every game the Phils played after one of those losses, they won. That was the most resilient Phillies team I've seen in 30 years of following them.

Unfortunately (and I said this to my friend), I think the Mets are resilient like that right now. Their bullpen without Wagner is fairly similar to our 2007 bullpen pre-September. That loss at CBP was far from the first excruciating defeat for them. They keep bouncing back.

But I also think this Phils team has some bounce left. I'm pretty sure they won't roll over, and I suspect they have one more run in them--whether at the division or the wild card.

(An aside: the other thing I'm feeling right now is real rage and loathing at the Milwaukee Brewers. If we fall short and the Mets get them in the first round, I hope the same thing happens then as happened this week.)

Somehow, someway, the Phillies have to get their soul back. The Mets have that spirit, that energy, that the Phillies once had.

I propose a spirit transfer ceremony. I'm not a voodoo priest, but I'm probably the closest thing we have here, so I'll do it.
Together we will win this game against the evil Space Yankees! Eat Fresh!

No, it must be kept. In four weeks when we are making plans for the playoffs, the weak must be remembered.
