Blanton kinda looks like the dude in Bake's avatar. But, you know, not as lucky.

Get Duchscherer!

The Harden deal increases the chances that the A's could make more moves before July 31, with Street and starter Joe Blanton potentially on the block. Rumors about Blanton and Philadelphia gained speed Tuesday, and there were also rumblings that teams have interest in Duchscherer.

Is it the 210 ERA+ or the 0.865 WHIP which is the problem? Granted he's phenomenal at home and merely terrific on the road, but still. . .

I'd rather have him than Blanton but that is a case that Beane might be able to do some raping with. THe guy is 30 years old and is just now producing.

It has more to do with

a.) him being a starter for the first time
b.) him having problems with injuries in the past
c.) his ridiculously unsustainable .208 BABIP
d.) and his mediocre 1.07 GB:FB ratio
e.) 1 year (2009) before FA
f.) the fact that he's due for a major regression, based on his low K rate and letter c above.

Though his numbers alone make it look like he was just overlooked.

He's produced before, but as a reliever. This is his first year as a starter. They stretched him our slowly, but in his last 8 starts he's averaged 7.625 IP/start. He leads the league in WHIP and ERA, has 10 wins and makes only $1.2MM.

I hear you, but he's having a spectacular year and, given a choice between him and Blanton. . . Also, the fact that he's not a FA for another year and a half is as much a plus as it is a minus. None of the "options" the Phils have come without risk, e.g., both you and I like Bedard. I just think Duchscherer might be the best bet for something approaching quality at a reasonable cost.

Rather be raped for him than cornholed for Blehnton.

I worry that "Duchscherer" is German for "Terry Adams"...

Actually, my big concern just would be his health. It doesn't seem plausible for a guy to go from "injury-prone reliever" to "durable starter" in his early 30s.

Okay, I've found something that might make Blanton a bit more palatable. His Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is 4.11, almost a run lower than his ERA of 4.96. So he's pitched in some bad luck this year. Though that doesn't excuse the higher walk and homer rates.

There are deals I'd make for him--something like Castro, Carpenter and Harman--but nothing I imagine would be acceptable to the A's.
