I really like her formal work and am annoyed by her poverty-porn stuff. think it's a shame the latter gets most of the attention

Ha, ya, I guess that's a good name for it. I don't think it's exploitative, tho. She gets pretty intimate with these people, and I still think most people aren't aware that American's live in such terrible poverty. It's like a less widely publicized version of RFK visiting Appalachian homes. I dig em, probably partly b/c I dont have the balls to get into those types of scenarios.

Yeah, I think she means well, but the end result still kind of skeeves me out. Part of it is working here in the library and the photography section is like a smorgasbord of poor people with sad looks on their faces. Literally every constituency of poor people since the invention of photography is well-represented in that same portrait style. We got Russian poor, 19th Century poor, Texas poor, African poor, three books of Camden poor. Stare at em as long as you want! They can't see you!

Any of you good at identifying the time period of old photos? I've been to a few web sites that have suggestions, but I'm not very good at picking out the subtle differences between clothing styles that they mention.
My grandfather has a photo on his wall that he thinks is his great-grandfather (or maybe great-great). The man who he thinks it is died in 1869 though so I would think there would be something about what he's wearing that would let me at least determine that it could be him or definitely can't be.

I'm assuming it's a posed photograph. Are you able to examine the back of it or the photo out of frame in order to see if there is any information on the photographer? You can often determine when the photographer was active-or active at the specific location mentioned- thus giving you a least a general range.

The unfortunate thing is that it may have been a redone photo as there's no information on it.

Ha, yes. Although all I have right now is a picture of the photo that my aunt took because my grandfather doesn't have a scanner.
