Grammar annoyances

Postby The Dude » Fri Feb 19, 2010 16:18:51

Bill Burr is the worst person to listen to if you get bothered by grammar. He says "supposably", "for intensive purposes", and a few others I can't recall right now whether or not

Why should it? That makes sense.

It's supposed to be hyperbolic.

No, because that's what the statement should be.

Yeah, I guess it's supposed to be hyperbolic, but sometimes when I say it, I could literally not care less.

As I said before saying "I could care less" in a situation where you're trying to convey the message that you don't care doesn't make any sense.

To his credit, he readily admits that he's a total idiot and doesn't know anything.

I'm aggravated by this otherwise intelligent girl at work who uses the word "literally" in like every third sentence.

Yeah, it's hilarious, I don't get annoyed at it at all, but I think phat's brain might explode during an episode

It's good to keep that in mind when he starts to talk about the "truth" about 9/11...

It's always bothered me too. I was having a conversation about it the other day with a coworker and I couldn't get him to understand why it should be "couldn't" and not "could". He just didn't get it.

I see it more in these contexts:

I own a lot of CD's.
They're all from the 90's.

Incorrect, I say.

At the beginning of UFC events Mike Goldberg announces that the winner of each round gets ten points and the loser gets "nine points or less." I used to think it should be "nine points or fewer" but I've decided that "nine points or less" is correct, or at least, not wrong.

I think the rule is that if the word is referring to something you can count, you use the word fewer. If you're referring to an idea or things you can't count, you use the word less. So there are fewer people at the concert but less of a crowd, for example. I know this because I once wrote an advertising campaign using the word less when it should have been fewer. But honestly, less sounded better.

Didn't I?
