I would say that just the opposite is true.

In the context of an NFL team, a team that controls its own destiny doesn't need any help--if they win, they make the playoffs regardless of what happens in other games. So, for instance, "The Giants control their own destiny and make the playoffs with a win against the Redskins. The Eagles need to beat the Cowboys and need the Giants to beat the Redskins to make the playoffs."

I have no idea what idea someone who says "it is what it is" is trying to express. Of course it is what it is. It's like saying A=A or 1=1. Unless of course you don't mean is in the sense of strict identity. But then the phrase it is what it is doesn't make much sense at all.

I guess I should have said that I understand both expressions but that one involves using a word ("destiny") in an antithetical sense.

One cannot control one's destiny; that's the nature of destiny. "It is what it is" means just that it cannot be changed. It's similar in meaning to "no use crying over spilt milk."

That was pretty funny. Anyway, I'm not sure destiny always has to reflect a deterministic universe.

I just meant that "Got Milk?" wasn't grammatically correct either, but to be honest I don't know if that's even true.

I think technically "got milk?" is incorrect. But it's a commonly used colloquial construction and doesn't bother me.

I'm trying to imagine a situation where using "less" when "fewer" would be correct wouldn't sound wrong to me.

Well there's the Air Supply song, "Two Less Lonely People in the World." Just kidding.

I actually think it's a fairly common mistake. This campaign made it through numerous proofreaders and research testing, as well as a client that was very picky about grammar, and no one caught it. It wasn't until the campaign ran that people pointed out the mistake. I had never known the less vs. fewer rule before that, but I sure do now.

Is it "I've said my piece" or "I've said my peace"?

I always thought peace, but I'm seeing piece more and more in message board talk.

It's "piece". Like each speaker's prepared speach, or each instrument's part in a musical arrangement. Or like a piece of your mind.

Major league baseball players are always men. You can say "he" or "him" or "his" when talking of an unspecified player.

Thank you.

Ditto for President of the United States. It can change and that's great but when writing a paper on the subject, the President is "he/him/his" until that day.

Possibly mentioned somewhere in here, but it's worth repeating:

There are few things that annoy me more than people using "would of", "could of", "should of".

Is it not more annoying to hear: "would'a, should'uh' could'a."? Articulate please.

At least woulda/shoulda/coulda contains one of the letters from the word "have" in the contraction

What annoys me about grammar is that you can't modify an extreme, like "most unique"
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America
