The death of the newspaper industry (now w/ more zolecki)

This surprised me when I first saw it, and then after about thirty seconds I realized that, yes, leaving a declining industry (even one that seemed incredibly stable and powerful when I was a kid) for a rising one (even if it didn't exist when I was a kid) is probably a good call.

Either way, he brings a hell of a lot more credibility than Mandel did. We might even have to retire the name "Phillies Pravda."

Good for him. Although I must admit and I didn't think he added much as the team's beat writer. David Murphy is much better at the Daily News.

Maybe Marcus Hayes buried the bar so far underground that they all look good, but I thought both Zolecki and Murphy were/are pretty solid. Roberts too--I hope he gets the Inqy gig long-term, if he wants it.

The whole industry is pretty much screwed. Unfortunately, so might be anyone who's appreciated that the media sometimes nails publicly elected scumbags.

I'll admit it really bugged me that the above-linked article appeared just a few days after this one in the same publication, featuring this quote:

Allbritton is dismissive of one of the things print papers did well--long-term, long-form investigative journalism--and tells me Politico is unlikely to field an investigative reporting squad. "I think we have to acknowledge that the money is spent for reputational benefits and a public service play," he says of the Times' and the Post's investment in enterprise journalism. "Why does someone have to go off and write their thesis paper while they do it?"

Everybody hates the MSM. But they do something pretty important, and we're at risk of losing that.

There was a blurb on the potential for this in the NY Times last week. It also mentioned that Tierney had approached Gov. Rendell for money from the state via the bailout bill as a source for support.

The slide has been feeding on itself. After the WSJ purchase the writing went quickly down hill. I am not sure if there were firings or if people were just made to feel unwelcome and left (I recall that the editor and chief left as he felt he could not do his job long term). After I read an article on page one about people going NIMBY regarding a US Steel rail route through their Chicago McMansions and how they were going to fight the sale of the active rails to CN because it would disrupt their lives, I could not read this "business paper" any longer. What a long fall from it formerly esteemed place.

I will say that I do miss reading well written material as reporting in general is turning to spew as it tries to get more internet like.

The Daily News will continue to be publish as a tabloid and will be sold separately, both to home subscribers and in street sales. “It’s not going to be combined. It’s not going to be changed,” Tierney said.

For the two papers to be regarded as a single publication by the Audit Bureau of Circulation, which monitors newspaper sales, the phrase “an edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer” will appear under the Daily News logo on the front page. The change takes effect March 30.
