I believe his Mickey Katz phase was a one-CD foray

Hoping to hear him at Poisson Rouge in NYC this Friday evening

Did hear Byron Friday, with Rudy Royston + piano & bass. High-energy set in a packed place.

Favorite musicians this weekend were Yosvany Terry, Pedrito Martinez, Omer Avital - but the surprise star for me was pianist/vocalist Ariacne Trujillo, who appeared with Martinez - jaw-dropping! She has to be heard live to be fully appreciated (clip gives the slightest taste of her skills)

2012 results of Francis Davis annual poll of jazz writers' favorite releases

A quick scan says to me if you were looking for a list of recordings to provide you an idea of "where jazz is these days", you could do lots worse than this one

something that might be of interest to some; link takes you to a trove of snippets of interviews, most from the 1970s & 80s, archived by a Canadian jazz radio station. Most are 1-2 minutes long, and all I've listened to have terrific sound quality. No particular insights; valuable almost entirely just for the sound & cadence of various musicians' voices.

Knowns & unknowns, from Ahmad Jamal to Arts Pepper & Farmer, to Cecil Taylor, to Mingus, to Jim Hall, to Tal Farlow to Woody Shaw

should have mentioned la smoothe & myself took in Rudresh Mahanthappa's current troupe at Yale 2 Fridays ago. Ensemble features guitarist David “Fuze” Fiuczynski, Francois Moutin on bass, and the jaw-dropping percussion guy Dan Weiss. Fine set in a small, "boomy" hall.

Guitar fans of all kinds would probably enjoy Fiuczinski, who's a guitar player first, and jazzman maybe 7th. But at his skill level, 7th is a lot of people's 1st

I'd never heard of Beverly Kenney until I happened on a small mention in Marc Myers JazzWax blog.

This song didn't cause me to fall in love with her singing, but it got my attention. This treatment of The Things We Did Last Summer added interest. And then I bought this recording of her with guitarist Johnny Smith , and there I am.

Excerpt of messages with a friend (who asked that her identity remain a secret because she’s embarrassed to admit that she knows me in real life.)

me: Ugh. Don’t tell Victor, but I REALLY hate jizz.

friend: Um. Okay.

me: I mean, I get the draw, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

friend: Why exactly would Victor be mad at that?

me: Because he really likes it and he wants me to share his interests, I guess? I just can’t get into it.

friend: Speechless. What does he expect you to do with it?

me: Just enjoy it, I guess? He collects it.

friend: Like…in a jar? This is kinda TMI.

me: Oh, holy shit. I just reread what I wrote. Not jizz. JAZZ. I meant to write JAZZ. Victor wants me to appreciate JAZZ with him.

friend: Oh, thank Christ.

me: I really need to spell-check this shit before I send it out.

friend: The “i” and the “a” are like…not even remotely close to each other. Was that an autocorrect?

me: I don’t think so. I’ve never even written “jizz” on my phone before. I must have done it unconsciously.

friend: That’s a weird Freudian slip.

me: I guess I just had jizz on the brain.

friend: Stop typing.

me: No way. My phone is finally starting to recognize jizz. It’s like it’s learning.

friend: You’re corrupting your phone. With jizz.

me: Ew.

friend: I need a shower.

me: You and me both, sister.

NYTimes' Joe Nocera (?!?!) writes two pages on Anat Cohen.

Everything about it, from the title ("Jazz's Skinny Stepchild" which refers of course not to Ms Cohen, who is zaftig, but to her instrument), is off.

I've gone on & on over the months & years about how fantastic Cohen is. And she is. And of course Nocera finds her so. But he's bafflingly ignorant of other contemporary clarinetists (he does get around to mentioning Don Byron and Ken Peplowski, but nary a peep about Evan Christopher, or Chris Speed), and of contemporary jazz, and of pretty much everything, that his piece cloys, rather than coaxes readers to go find out more.

So read the article anyways, but don't like it too much. Mostly go get you some Anat Cohen

Not sure how many people use "TuneIn" Radio App, but I've been using it for quite some time and it allows me to access many of the top Jazz stations in the country.

KCSM in Bay Area
WRTI in Philly
the one based in Newark

It's nice to have some variety and choices.

The switch from all jazz was very controversial. Dumbass Temple president (Liacourus?) thought classical music would be more prestigious and "classy". On the web, WBGO and WWOZ are two very good jazz stations. (Not every program on WWOZ is jazz though.) I think Columbia University's station plays a lot of jazz as well.

I'd never heard Roger Kellaway before, but I hear a song from an album of his from the 70s, and thought it was very pretty. Sort of Keith Jarret like, without the moaning. (I like Keith Jarret a lot by the way.)
