Gabriell & Dresden are Electronica DJ's and good friends of mine. He put me on the VIP pass list and tried to convince me to come to Vegas to see Electric Daisy Carnival which is possibly the largest electronica festival in the world now. But I already had the ticket for Gonzalo who is now my favorite pianist to hear solo since McCoy got too old and can't play like he used to.... It's at the Herbst Theater as part of the SF Jazz programming.

If you didn't know, SF Jazz is now the largest organization for Jazz programming and they are building their own facility the first of its kind -- a dedicated space just for Jazz programming run by a Jazz organization. Randal Klein founder of SF Jazz has modeled himself on the Ballet, Opera, Symphony -- and his new space is a block from those places too...

Gonzalo is going to be dope as I've seen him many times but never "solo" which should for me, an ex-pianist - be amazingly inspirational. I'm bringing my ipod-recorder and going to try to make a bootleg of some it ...

sounds good, Kid. Speaking of good, I'm looking at SFJazz's website - WOW! You've mentioned the organization before, but for whatever reason I had not checked it out thoroughly enough. Doesn't seem like it could be real. For others interested:

2005 Charlie Parker biovid, from the Beeb:

its mishmash of unfamiliar stills of Parker as a boy & young man, Basie band & Lester Young, recognized narrators (Giddins gets considerable early minutes; Jay McShann, Gillespie, Phil Woods, Jimmy Heath, Roy Haynes, Sir John Dankworth make appearances), kansas city anecdotes mixed with familiar tales of Parker's life, and semi-incongruous blurry (atmospheric?) 're-enactment' footage that doesn't even try to be contemporary with Parker's years holds the attention for longer than you might expect, tho maybe not it's hour-long running length. Brit Peter King's offhand yet note-for-note recitation of a section of Parker playing Ornithology is deftly handled by the film's editors (about 18:50 in)

There are several audio snips of Parker himself from interviews, conversations & bandstand announcements.

Roy Haynes in June 2011, at 86 years young! He's coming to Stanford Jazz Summer Series, I'm thinking of going. Haven't seen him in years...

nice! speaking of young, Girl From Ipanema is...not, really, but forever:

GFI is 50, 7/3/12 - Stan Getz, in a medley with Desafinado. Girl begins about 3:15. Guy was damn good

4th installment of Marc Myers interview with Bob Whitlock, bassist with famed Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker pianoless quartet & notorious for allegedly putting Baker on the horse.

Myers is an acquired taste but he gets his interview subjects to surface a lot of interesting stuff. This installment dwells on the Chet Baker rumors. Whitlock is almost certainly providing a 'Whitlock-friendly' version of events. I'm repeatedly intrigued reading about the milieu of the west coast jazz druggies (Baker, Art Pepper, Whitlock here, Bill Evans, et al). California just doesn't seem like a heroin addiction kind of place.

Haven't listened to Mingus's Reincarnation of a Lovebird in a long time. It's playing right now and it 's quite awesome. It's not Ah Um, but it's still really great.

For years I wondered if I would ever 'get' Mingus. Then one day I found myself wondering why I had not been listening to his recordings for a lot longer. I've especially favored the recordings of two live performances lately; Mingus at Antibes & Cornell 1964, both featuring Eric Dolphy. I notice the distinctive tenor Booker Ervin plays on Reincarnation of a Lovebird; he was also on Antibes.

I got into Mingus more through others recording his compositions, especially Good Bye Pork Pie Hat and Better Git it in Your Soul.

I have that recording, but there are many other good ones. THere's a great on on Impulse. Also look for a track called "The Shoes of the Fishermans' Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers"

Cyrille Aimee, the girl singer we adopted briefly in spring 2011, has overhauled her website (for about the 15th time). The featured tune showcases her voice of course (with some nice scatting about 3 minutes in), and horn & bass samples from something that sounds quite like The Sidewinder.

her calendar sez she'll be at The Carlyle Hotel in NYC sunday nights in May 2013. See you there

Dippin & divin' in the (unfortunately subtitled*) The Jazz Standards: A Guide To The Repertoire. For me a big part of the jazz fun is the thicket of interconnections among composers, performers, venues, 'related parties', etc. Guides through that thicket are always welcome, & this one, published just last year, is more welcome than many. Stuff you never knew about songs you probably do (even if you'd rather not).

*Unfortunately subtitled in that there is no "the" repertoire; even author Ted Gioia would disavow that. Plus while the book's structure nominally proceeds from a big honking list of about 250 songs identified as standards, it is as much about musicians, eras, and culture as about the songs themselves.

Some guy in that jazz hotbed - Milwaukee - has made a Spotify playlist of several tunes referenced in Gioia's book. Unfortunately it does not look like the guy limited himself to the specific recordings Gioia writes of; rather he simply gathered up any & all recordings of the titled songs that he could find. NOT the same thing; not at all. Oh well.

This is great:

Harlem Tries Again to Rebuild the Union of Jazz and Food

Image

Mintons has huge history of course. Guy behind this is Dick Parsons, ran AOL/Time Warner shortly after the time Steve Case played TW for chumps. Which basically means the project has plenty of dough to work with

Prediction: the Bud Light signs are not long for this world.... 8-)

yes, you do

he's nothing if not eclectic; I'd suggest start with 'material' you like that he's recorded. For example, if you like Junior Walker (Shotgun, Pucker Up Buttercup, ) Do the Boomerang's good stuff. But he's playing tenor there, not clarinet, his strongest suit. For that, maybe Ivey Divey, which showcases his wondrous tone in a variety of compositions, particularly those linked with Miles Davis like In A Silent Way and Freddie Freeloader.

And then there's Bug Music's Ellingtonia!

yes, you do
