True story -- early 80's I'm way way out in the middle of nowhere up in the Adirondacks. Had to hike miles and row row-boats to get to my friends obscure cabin -- upper Lake Ausable area -- anyway me and my buddy and our two hippie chicks are up there camping --- we're up on the roof of the log cabin - looking at comets across the sky and biddie one starts humming this tune... and I'm like "wuh...???" and this is like the Crosby Stills Nash and Young kind of girl... and I'm like "are you humming Fly with the Wind ? She says "yeah..."

Totally random moment.

The best version of this is on the 1977 Live Album called "The Greeting" -- he also won a grammy for his Jazz Big Band in the 90's and they do a version of it on there... great tune... very much McCoy's sound compositionally ....

GREAT story, Kid - and I'm familiar with the location you mention. Beautiful - and remote!

while we're on '70s jazz, one of my favorites is this one from Bobbi Humphrey:

These two don't particularly go together any special way, but

Avishai Cohen's take on Ornette Coleman's One Man's Idea

There's YouTubes of it but they're just 45 second teasers (wtf)

and Jack Teagarden's 1950s version of A Hundred Years From Today, a sentimental 30s number that hits the spot, straight or (my preference) mixed with whiskey.

I like to imagine any backshegoes individual, particularly Smitty, or maybe even Whitey, would sing like Teagarden.

Allmusic basically relegates Teagarden's 50s Roulette sessions to the Dixieland bin. Ridiculous.

I assume they were trying to be funny or something ... but talk about accidents -- those hair styles and clothing -- step in to the 21st century clowns.

This is the most action we've had in this thread since Floppy thought he could actually debate me on abstract art and music!

Glad I can still provide the willing suspension of disbelief! :-)

there are a startling number of outstanding clarinetists playing these days: Don Byron, Anat Cohen, Ken Peplowski, and a guy who may be my favorite - Evan Christopher.

Is there anything like "avant-traditional", or "avant-dixieland"? Check any of the recordings here out, but the last, Fantasy on Joe Avery's 2nd Line, will have you cha-cha'ing

Gotta admit I'm intrigued by that new New Orleans club, too

Missing Gabriel & Dresden VIP pass at Electric Daisy Carnival this Fri in Vegas, but going to see Gonzalo Rubalcaba SOLO piano as part of SF Jazz on Saturday night! I had to pick one and since I was VIP'd out at Mansion in Miami in March, I went with who I wanted to see over my boy...
