Tin Cup is very high up on my favorite movies of all time. (Favorite in the watch-and-laugh rather than cinematic event sense.)

I don't think I've seen all that many sports movies. I think the only sports movies I've seen infact are:

Slapshot
Caddyshack
Remember the Titans
Invincible
Major League 1 & 2
Raging Bull

although, I think DD's defenition of a sports movie is pretty broad, I would not consider American Beauty a sports movie, By the same defenition could you consider pulp fiction a sports movie? What about snatch?

Great list. I don't know why I always say Teen Wolf is my favorite basketball movie when Hoop Dreams is one of my top ten movies of all time. It's just a phenomenal movie from beginning to end. I remember seeing it in the theater back in 1995 and I remember being disappointed at the end because I wanted to see more. I've never had another three hour movie give me that kind of feeling.

I went to college with a kid who was a freshman on the St. Joe's hoops team the year that William Gates was a senior. His name was Rodney Horton and you can see him ever so briefly at the end of the film. What I found most interesting in talking to him about Hoop Dreams (he had lived the same life of an urban Chicago kid being recruited to play hoops in the suburbs at St. Joe's) was that he felt that Coach Pingatore was unfairly portrayed in the film. He thought that he comes off as kind of harsh, but that he really was a coach who cared greatly for his players.

I know that American Beauty isn't a cheerleading film in the traditional sense, but it features enough cheerleading that it works for me. It's my game so I'll play it how I want. I didn't set any rules for this. If people want to say that M*A*S*H was a football movie because it featured a football game, they can. It won't bother me.

Cause it's all cult following and little actual funniness?

I mean it's ok, but it's no Tin Cup.

This doesn't deserve a response- Harold Ramis rules Ron Shelton and you know it.

Maybe late '70s slapstick comedies just don't hold up well. I saw Caddyshack for the first time maybe five years ago and wondered what all the fuss was about.

Baseball : Bang the Drum Slowly
Tennis : Match Point
Soccer:The Goalie's anxiety at the Penalty Kick
Football: MASH (thanks Drugs!), or if I have to pick an actual football movie the original Longest Yard, which I'm now wondering how I ever saw it in a theater since it's rated R, and even I'm not that old . Probably why I liked it.

I saw the original Longest Yard in a theater. I was in High School so I couldn't have been 18. I don't think they carded anyone at movie theaters back then.
