Favorite Sports Movies

Just watched an excellent baseball movie on DVD called "Sugar", about a young player from the Dominican Republic making his way through the minor league system (a drama, not a documentary). If you haven't seen it, I recommend it.

Best Chess = Fresh circa '94

Cheesey as it is, The Natural still appeals to me more than Bull Durham or Field of Dreams though those were great. I would have said Longest Yard too, until someone reminded me of Brian's Song ... and Bingo Long was a great little flic in its day and I had a crush on Tatum Oneil, so Bad News Bears gets an honorable mention.

Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of Major League. I never knew there was an alternative ending that revealed the owner was actually acting in good faith by finding the right collection of undiscovered players and was rooting for the team all along; she invented Moneyball! But test showing audiences hated it. I agree with them but also always found it weird that she was rooting against them all the way through that last game.

Other ending better

But very weird the way they predicted the Moneyball era 10 years ahead of time.

The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings

The Sandlot

A League of Their Own

The Natural

All worthy choices, but not quite top ten material in my eyes.

Don't underestimate Bingo Long. That was a fun movie. Pyror, Billy D, James Earl... Natural seems a bit dated now, but it was a real Hollywood emotion jerker...

I've seen most of the ones I would have stated ...

Longest yard
Bad news Bears was fun in its day - dated now

Raging Bull I never thought of as a sports movie but it dwarfs every other movie listed here !

Which makes Bad News Bears even better now.

The best sports movies are all baseball movies.

Most baseball movies which take place at the big league level are frustrating to me because most of the time the actors clearly have no baseball skills.

Makes you wanna walk right up to them and say, "Hey! What are you doing? You're acting like you play baseball or something."
