latest Dan Carlin episode goes into the Republic vs Democracy pretty well. real high level, but good perspective on things.

Lee's view is pretty common in right wing circles, though there are all kinds of variations--lots of people at Heritage for example embrace this view, and there's a bunch of them at George Mason University. There's a terrible book called The Myth of the Rational Voter that expresses this. Keep in mind, Lee does not actually use the phrase republicanism in his tweet--there's all kind of interesting neo-republicanism political thought out there which would be more fitting on left side of the spectrum. One thing many share is they understand freedom as "non-dominance" which would mean, among other things, dismantling all dominating institutions, especially large corporations.

Yeah I do think a republic cuts both ways. It prevents the majority from simply forcing its way all the time... but it also allows an elite few to subvert the system to their own ends in defiance of the will of the people.

The biggest thing to notice IMHO is that everyone loves "the people" - if they believe the people to be on their side of the argument.
